Brydon Carse has finally returned to competitive cricket after spending nearly three months on the sidelines. He sustained a hand injury that ruled him out for an extended period, including IPL 2026 and New Zealand Tests.
In the ongoing The Hundred 2026, where he’s representing Sunrisers Leeds, Carse has shown encouraging signs with the ball. He has been among the wickets, even if some wayward bowling has made run-scoring easier for the batters at times.

Brydon Carse is currently Sunrisers Leeds’ leading wicket-taker in The Hundred 2026. He has eight wickets, the joint third-most this season, at 23.37 runs apiece and an economy rate of 9.35 in six outings. This includes his best figures against Birmingham Phoenix last night.
He started the tournament with two wickets for 18 runs against MI London before going wicketless against Southern Brave.
Then, he picked up a solitary wicket against Manchester Super Giants and two more against Trent Rockets in the subsequent game. Carse endured a tough outing against London Spirit, but bounced back strongly to take a three-wicket haul against the Phoenix.
Earlier, the lanky pacer also featured in three T20 Blast 2026 fixtures for Durham. He snared four wickets at an average of 20.25 and an economy rate of 7.36. Overall, he has 12 wickets at an average of 22.33 and a strike rate of 15.50 in nine innings this year.

Returning from an injury, Brydon Carse has shown encouraging signs, even though he didn’t play the format earlier in the year. He has a knack for picking wickets, and fortunately, his return has been relatively smooth.
The hand injury extended well beyond what was initially anticipated, but his rhythm seems fine now that he has recovered.
Carse’s powerplay and middle overs expertise

A major reason Brydon Carse is highly rated in the English circuit has been his ability to operate effectively in the powerplay and middle overs.
He is among those pacers who can move the ball at pace, particularly away from RHBs. Then, he also understands how to hit hard lengths and generate additional bounce with a slightly older ball.
In The Hundred 2026, Carse has six wickets at an average of 16 and a strike rate of 11.66 in the powerplay. Additionally, he has conceded only 8.23 runs per over and bowls 50% dot balls. He has another two wickets in the middle phase, albeit at an economy rate of 10.53.
Five of his 8 wickets in the tournament have come from lengths shorter than 8 metres - two from back-of-a-length and three from short deliveries.
His ability to generate extra bounce and hit higher on the bat makes his shorter lengths threatening. Take the dismissals of Mitchell Owen and Rehan Ahmed against Birmingham Phoenix last night, for instance.
Brydon Carse dug one short delivery outside the off-stump line that kept climbing on Owen. The batter tried to pull it away, but the extra bounce meant he could only get a top edge, as the ball went straight into the mid-wicket fielder’s hands. Similarly, Rehan also faltered while attempting a pull shot, as he could not get any distance due to a top edge.
All these attributes make Carse a genuinely solid enforcer for the middle overs, apart from his obvious new-ball skills. A combination of both is hard to get in one bowler, making him all the more valuable in white-ball cricket.
Why Sunrisers Hyderabad should keep Brydon Carse for IPL 2027
Brydon Carse picked up that hand injury just before the opening game of IPL 2026. He was initially expected to regain fitness for the latter stages of the tournament, but that never happened. Unfortunately, this has been a recurring theme for him over the last couple of seasons.
Even in 2025, Carse was ruled out of the IPL with a toe injury, forcing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to bring in a replacement. Despite missing two consecutive seasons, SRH should consider retaining him for IPL 2027 for several reasons.
Pat Cummins’ availability could be limited next season due to Australia’s packed schedule, which begins later this month. Starting with the Bangladesh Test series, Australia are set to play 20 Tests, including five in India just before IPL 2027, before the Ashes concludes next year. There is also a World Cup in South Africa later in 2027.
Given Cummins’ injury history, including his latest back issue, Cricket Australia could restrict his involvement in next year’s IPL.
If that happens, SRH will need an alternative, and Carse fits the role perfectly. Like Cummins, the English all-rounder can operate effectively in the powerplay and middle overs while also possessing a knack for picking up wickets.
Carse could partner Praful Hinge and Sakib Hussain with the new ball before teaming up with Eshan Malinga in the middle and death overs.
His presence would also add variety to SRH’s bowling attack. Indian batters can often be susceptible to hard lengths into the body, a length most pacers rely on more frequently on flat surfaces.
Carse is also a capable batter who can attack pace in the slog overs. He has a T20 strike rate of 137.15. He strikes at 133.83 against pace, with a boundary coming every 7.35 deliveries.
That makes him precisely the kind of player SRH could need in Cummins’ absence, helping them maintain both batting and bowling depth.
There are unlikely to be many quality pace-bowling all-rounders available in the mini-auction either. Hence, SRH should retain Carse based purely on the value he offers as a genuine all-rounder.
