Meet Campbell Thompson, Australia Prodigy Who Rattled Bangladesh With His 8/25

A prodigy arose for Australia yet again after a 22-year-old pacer rattled through Bangladesh’s batting lineup in the warm-up match of the Bangladesh Tour of Australia 2026. Campbell Thompson shook the cricketing world with his 8-wicket haul to tear through the visitors' batting lineup and hand the hosts an easy win.

The match started off on a gritty note and looked like it was going to have some fierce competition after Bangladesh’s first innings of 263. However, after Australia mounted to 355, Thompson created history by being someone to take 8 wickets in just one first-class match.

Who is Campbell Thompson?

The left-arm swing bowler hailing from Mount Barker in the South Australia province started his cricketing journey in his early years. He first played during his schooling days while graduating from Prince Alfred College. There, he became one of the key figures with the ball as he represented his college, which won an intercampus cricket tournament.

His next shift in his career was playing club cricket in 2023 till he made it to the Adelaide Strikers Academy in August 2025. The talented bowler, who also takes a lot of interest in playing golf, then bowled in five matches for AS Academy before making his debut in the PM’s XI against England XI in November 2025.

He had been doing fairly well till then without a lot of wickets in his bag. However, he got his maiden call-up in the Sheffield Shield season of 2025-26, where he represented South Australia against Queensland in February 2026. 

The match was fairly impressive for the Barry Jarmman award winner, where he managed to bag 2 wickets in the first innings and one in the second, accounting for a total of 3 wickets while giving 44 runs. This impressive spell had him get the call-up for the current CA XI setup, where his left-arm pace ability is an added bonus for his CV.

How did Thompson dismantle Bangladesh in the warm-up match?

Campbell Thompson was a nightmare for Bangladesh in the second innings. While Bangladesh settled in the first innings with a remarkable century from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who scored 151 off 109 balls, Thompson was able to take only one wicket in that innings while conceding 26 runs.

However, in the second innings, things took a massive turn. As Bangladesh came in to bat after Australia were bowled out, Thompson ran riot through the top and middle order and also cleaned up the tail, bundling Bangladesh out for just 54 runs before they could even overturn Australia's 92-run lead.

Thompson first removed Shadman Islam in the third over, with Mominul Haque following soon after. Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Hossain Shanto were also dismissed by Thompson, with only Tanzid Hasan fighting to salvage the game as an opener. 

Ultimately, Campbell Thompson finished with figures of 8 for 25 in the second innings, at an economy rate of 2.27. That gave him match figures of 9 for 51 and virtually handed him the Player of the Match award in the one-off game.

Call-up for the national team soon?

What works in Thompson's favour is his ability to swing the ball from the very start of an innings as an opening bowler, coupled with the advantage of being a left-arm quick. 

Mitchell Starc, Australia's primary bowling pillar for many years, is now approaching the fag end of his career, and it is time for Cricket Australia to start identifying a potential replacement and, more importantly, keep promising talent in the pipeline.

It is now beginning to look as though Campbell Thompson, despite having just one first-class match under his belt, could be a prodigy Australia would want to nurture. 

Hence, if not immediately, Thompson, much like Sam Konstas, could have a chance of featuring in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India or maybe earlier if the team management decides to back its emerging talents.
