Biggest blunders made during India's squad selection for Zimbabwe series [Source: AFP]
India is currently playing against England in a gruelling five-match T20I series, and amidst the tour, the BCCI revealed India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe tour. The core of the squad has been retained with a couple of fresh faces added for the next Indian assignment away from home.
India cannot take Zimbabwe lightly, and the BCCI knows that, as the selection committee has gone ahead with the winning formula. However, not all selections have been met with a positive review. Some of the players picked by the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel have also met with criticism.
In this article, we analyse and take a look at all the selection blunders made by the BCCI when announcing the India T20I squad for the Zimbabwe series.
1) Picking Mayank Yadav in the team
Perhaps the biggest question one should ask the selectors? What is Mayank Yadav doing in the T20I squad? An injury-prone pacer who hasn’t done much in this format was picked for the Zimbabwe series by the selectors.
A promising young pacer who wreaked havoc in IPL 2024, Mayank’s career has been marred by injuries, and he has not been the same ever since he suffered an injury during the 2024 season.
In recent years, his pace has dropped massively, and his recent IPL 2026 performance reveals the entire story.
| Criterion | Data |
| Matches | 4 |
| Dismissals | 0 |
| Economy | 11.38 |
(Mayank Yadav stats in IPL 2026)
- He played just four matches in the IPL 2026 and failed to pick up a single wicket as he went wicketless in the entire tournament. Moreover, his economy rate of 11.38 was also questionable as batters punished him easily.
- In IPL 2025, he only picked up 2 wickets, with an economy touching 12.50. His performances have not been up to the mark, and yet, the selectors picked him for the away tour of Zimbabwe.
2) Why Harsh Dubey in the squad?
Harsh Dubey might have great first-class numbers, and he might have done well for India in the ODIs vs Afghanistan, but why was he picked for the T20I format? His IPL and T20 numbers have been questionable, and the selectors could have gone in with a better choice.
He was given a chance by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2026, and he failed to impress, as the numbers reveal the reality.

| Criterion | Data |
| Matches | 8 |
| Dismissals | 8 |
| Economy | 10.36 |
(Harsh Dubey IPL 2026 stats)
- He played eight matches for SRH, and the left-arm spinner only managed to pick up 8 wickets, with an economy of 10.36.
- Not only in the IPL, but Dubey has also not done much in T20s, picking up just 34 wickets in 38 matches. He is more of a defensive bowler in this format, and nowadays, the format requires bowlers with an attacking mindset.
- In his place, India could have gone in with Krunal Pandya, who would have been an attacking option for Team India.
3) Yash Thakur in the T20Is
Out of nowhere, Yash Thakur was picked by the selectors for the India squad for the Zimbabwe tour. He has been a part of the Punjab Kings squad in the IPL, but in the last two seasons, the right-arm pacer has only played 3 matches.
A bowler who was not considered a part of Punjab Kings’ playing XI was suddenly drafted into the Indian team for the Zimbabwe series.
If India wanted to reward someone, it should have been Rasikh Salam Dar, who was pivotal for RCB in their title run, but instead, the selectors have picked a player who has hardly played in the most competitive T20 league and was benched for other players.
