Sooryavanshi has so far failed in Sri Lanka tri-series [Source: AFP]
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the talk of the town after his sudden outburst towards the Sri Lanka A players during the tri-series match on Monday. The riveting contest went down to the wire, with the hosts prevailing over India in the Super Over thriller.
Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge couldn’t chase down the total set by Sri Lanka A in the Super Over as the hosts celebrated wildly, and this made the teenager animated as he fought with them and hurled abuses.
While his behaviour has come under scrutiny, with fans lambasting him, his on-field performances have also dipped since the 15-year-old received an India call-up for the Ireland and England T20Is.
Sooryavanshi's rise through IPL 2026 performance
The 15-year-old star was touted to fail in the IPL 2026, and many believed that he was a one-season wonder. However, Sooryavanshi silenced his critics and became the best in the IPL by becoming the leading run-getter.
In 16 matches, Sooryavanshi accumulated 776 runs, with an astonishing strike rate of 237.31, and he swept away numerous awards. As a result, he caught the selectors’ attention and was drafted into the senior side for the UK tour.
The left-handed batter single-handedly dragged his franchise, the Rajasthan Royals, into the playoffs, and the BCCI immediately picked him for his maiden international assignment in the UK.
How Sooryavanshi has fared ever since getting India call-up
After the IPL, the Samastipur-born was picked in the India A squad for the Sri Lanka tri-series matches, and there were a lot of expectations from the youngster.

(Sooryavanshi stats in tri-series)
- In the ongoing tri-series tournament, Sooryavanshi has failed to deliver the goods, and this is despite him getting starts in two out of three games. In the first match against Sri Lanka A, the youngster could only score 14 off 12 before getting dismissed.
- In the second match against Afghanistan A, the swashbuckling batter scored a quickfire 44 off 22 balls, and punished the Afghan attack before he was sent packing.
- Once again in the third match against Sri Lanka, Sooryavanshi got a start and slammed 21 off 14, and once again failed to convert the start into a big score.
- So, before his potential senior India debut, the left-handed batter failed to deliver the goods, but he’ll be eager to get back amongst the run-scorers in the remaining matches.
Why Sooryavanshi failed in tri-series?
- Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s average in the IPL 2026 was 48.50, and in the tri-series, it was 26.33. Hence, there has been a 46 percent slash in his average between IPL and the tri-series.
- There are several reasons for his failure, but the biggest one is the transition from T20 to ODI. An average of 26.33, and a strike rate in excess of 150 is considered to be excellent, but this average is considered poor in ODIs.
- The youngster found it tough to adjust from the T20 format to the 50-overs game in the tri-series.
- Another main reason is the weight of expectations the youngster is carrying on his shoulders. After an excellent IPL season, everyone expects the teenager to score runs in every single game, but that is not possible. Hence, every time he fails to score big, people criticise him.
Sooryavanshi's form, a cause of worry for India?
At just 15, Sooryavanshi shouldn’t be judged on the basis of just three matches. The A games are all about giving exposure to the youngsters, and these matches will help the 15-year-old become a better player.
Sooryavanshi’s game plan, irrespective of the format, is simple: see the ball, hit it, and the management shouldn’t change it for the upcoming UK tour. In the IPL, he was smashing the best bowlers of the world, and hence, failures in three games shouldn’t worry the Indian management about his future.
