In a rain-curtailed first ODI between India and Afghanistan, the hosts dominated the proceedings and defeated the Afghan side to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Rain tried to play spoilsport in the Dharamsala ODI match, but the Indian side prevailed despite a stunning century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
India chased down the target set by Afghanistan easily, but despite an exhilarating display in the IND Vs AFG 1st ODI, the game will forever be remembered for the run-out incident between captain Shubman Gill and senior batter Rohit Sharma.
Gill's mistake leads to Rohit Sharma's run-out
India needed 195 to take a lead in the series and the match was reduced to a 25-overs per side contest. The Indian openers started on an aggressive note, and Afghanistan needed a magic moment to get rid of them.
The moment arrived for them, but not due to their brilliance, but the miscommunication between Rohit and Gill. In the 6th over, Rohit tucked a delivery towards mid-wicket as he immediately charged for a quick single.
Allah Ghazanfar ran across Gill to collect the ball as the Afghan player blocked his way. With the bowler in his sight, Gill denied the single, but the call took a bit of time as Rohit was already halfway down the track, and the batter was run out at the striker's end.
Had Gill called a bit early, Rohit would have had enough time to go back and get inside the crease.
After the game ended, Shubman Gill revealed that everything is fine between him and Rohit, and the senior batter had no complaints with him.
"He saw the replay; he said it's fine. Even in the last match that we played against Afghanistan, T20s, he got run out there as well."
R Ashwin slams Gill for Rohit's dismissal
Even though Gill admitted that it was his mistake and the communication could have been better, R Ashwin, the former Indian cricketer, wasn’t pleased with what he saw on the field as he slammed the Indian ODI skipper for the run-out incident.

While some cricket fans blame Rohit for his dismissal, Ashwin had a different opinion and he stated that miscommunication between two top players is unacceptable.
“I had seen that run-out live on broadcast, and I don't know when the audiences will realise that when you play in front of the wicket, whenever there is such a case, it is the call of the striker that the non-striker needs to uphold. It is really easy to debate. Gill denied the run, and this is also not the first run out between him and Rohit Sharma," R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
If the striker says yes to a run, there is no scene of saying no. All of these basics of running between the wickets are taught in childhood. All of these are basic things. Everyone makes mistakes. I am not saying it is the mistake of one or the other here, but the truth here is, Rohit was not at fault at all," he added.
Not the first time Gill and Rohit were involved in run-out vs Afghanistan
Interestingly, this is not the first time the Indian pair of Gill and Rohit were involved in a run-out against the same opposition (Afghanistan).
In the first T2OI between the two sides in early 2024, India needed 159 runs to win the contest, and in reply, the side had a disastrous start with Rohit Sharma getting run-out.
Rohit played a delivery towards the mid-off region and immediately called for a single. Gill, on the other hand, was ball watching, and by the time he turned back, both he, and Rohit were at the same end. The throw was inch-perfect towards the strikers end, and Rohit was sent packing without him troubling the scorers.
