Legendary Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was sidelined from the third ODI against England at Lord's. Led by Shubman Gill, India are taking on England in the final game of the ongoing three-match series at the Home of Cricket. After winning the first match comfortably, the Indians were swatted aside by their English counterparts in the subsequent encounter in Cardiff. 

With the series levelled one-all, India had to field their best combination for the deciding encounter. However, a knee injury curtailed Jasprit Bumrah's journey in the ODI series, ruling him out of the final ODI at Lord's. As the Men in Blue face their English opponents in the must-win clash, here we take a look at India's record without Jasprit Bumrah in ODIs. 

India's record without Jasprit Bumrah in ODIs

Jasprit Bumrah made his debut in international cricket for India in an ODI match against Australia at the SCG in 2016. Since then, he has been a match-winner for the Men in Blue across all formats. 

Apart from scripting many memorable Test wins for the team, Bumrah starred with the ball in India's victorious T20 World Cup campaign in 2024. While he undoubtedly remains India's most valuable asset with the ball, it's worth noting that the Men in Blue have done well without their premier fast bowler in ODIs.

India's ODI record without Jasprit Bumrah suggests that they have played 94 matches, winning 61 and losing 26 encounters. Three ODIs have been tied, while four matches have concluded without a result. 

Thus, India have an impressive win percentage of 64.89 in matches that Jasprit Bumrah has missed since making his ODI debut.

Why has Jasprit Bumrah missed ODIs for India?

Jasprit Bumrah is the most prolific T20 bowler in the world. Apart from making the new ball talk at a good pace, Bumrah hits the deck hard and outfoxes the batters with crafty slow balls and accurate yorkers in the middle and death overs. 

Therefore, Bumrah's place has been non-negotiable in the shortest format. Similarly, he remains India's most dependable and lethal bowling weapon in overseas Tests. Given that the fast bowler has been prone to injuries due to a physically demanding bowling action, the BCCI has judiciously managed his workload over the years. 

As a result, Bumrah has missed several bilateral ODI series, as evidenced by the 94 matches that India have played without him. Interestingly, the first match against England at Edgbaston marked Jasprit Bumrah's first ODI outing after two and a half years since he featured in the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad. 

How have India maintained a healthy ODI record without Jasprit Bumrah?

Although Bumrah's workload management has limited his appearances in ODI cricket, India have a formidable pool of fast bowlers to fill his void. Thus, whenever he has missed an ODI, workhorses like Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna have entered India's playing XI and strengthened their bowling attack. 

Thus, India's bench strength is a luxury that has allowed them to replace Bumrah without compromising their attack at a larger scale. Talking about the Lord's ODI, India have gone with a robust fast-bowling quartet comprising Prasidh, Arshdeep, Gurnoor Brar, and Prince Yadav. 

While Arshdeep brings variety with his left-arm angle and ability to swing the ball, Gurnoor, Prasidh and Prince can trouble the Englishmen with their pace and seam movement. However, given that three of them are playing an ODI at Lord's for the first time, it could be challenging for Arshdeep, Gurnoor and Prince to neutralise England's star-studded lineup.
