Brian Bennett took field against West Indies on February 23 on a trail of successive match-winning half-centuries for Zimbabwe this 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. After punching out three unbeaten knocks to guide Zimbabwe to a comprehensive Group B crusade in the tournament, the youngster was finally dismissed for once by West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein in Mumbai.
Nonetheless, through the course of Bennett’s prolific run this month, the cricketer surpassed Rohit Sharma among several others to scale a rare T20 World Cup batting record.
Rohit Sharma slips to fourth for rare T20 World Cup record
Brian Bennett, aged 22, made his T20I debut for Zimbabwe back in December 2023. However, the youngster played his first T20 World Cup match through the ongoing 2026 edition in India and Sri Lanka.

The right-hander started off his World Cup career with a match-winning 48* against Oman earlier this month in Colombo. He backed it up with a couple of swift unbeaten 60s against Australia and Sri Lanka in successive games to extend his tournament tally to a staggering 175 runs in just three innings without getting dismissed.
On Monday, February 23, Brian Bennett got finally knocked over by West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein for just five in Mumbai as Zimbabwe lost its Super 8 opener by 107 runs. In any case, the blistering opener charted 180 runs on his maiden T20 World Cup campaign before getting dismissed.
The young batting all-rounder has now become the recipient of a rare world record, scoring most runs in a T20 World Cup before getting their first dismissal.
He surpassed the likes of Netherlands’ Tom Cooper, USA’s Aaron Jones and even legendary Indian opener Rohit Sharma to bag the landmark figure, with all three losing a rung each on the list at the expense of Bennett. Here is a look at four batters with most runs to their names in T20 World Cup matches before their first dismissal.
Most Runs Before First Dismissal in the T20 World Cups:
| Players | Team | Runs | Edition(s) |
| Brian Bennett | Zimbabwe | 180 | 2026 |
| Tom Cooper | Netherlands | 151 | 2014 |
| Aaron Jones | USA | 141 | 2024 |

Throwback to Rohit Sharma’s dream T20 World Cup beginnings
Rohit Sharma made his tournament debut back during the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007. Listing a match-winning 50* against South Africa, and another 30* against Pakistan in the final, the legendary right-handed batter aggregated 88 runs in his maiden campaign.
On top of it all, the then youngster capped the competition by finding himself at the winner’s podium alongside the rest of his Indian colleagues in Johannesburg.
Rohit Sharma scored another 36 against Bangladesh in India’s opening match of the 2009 edition in England to go 124 runs before getting his first dismissal.
Brian Bennett aims to emulate Rohit Sharma, India’s success
Much like the former Indian opener on his T20 World Cup debut back in 2007, Brian Bennett will also be aiming to punch above his weight and take Zimbabwe to greater heights in the ongoing edition.
His prolific touch coupled with timely contributions from others already helped the ‘Chevrons’ to take the top position on the Group B points table. Despite Zimbabwe’s setback against West Indies, the team still has two more Super 8 matches remaining and must win both to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
Sikandar Raza and co. will now face India in Chennai on February 26 in match number 48 of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
