South Africa produced a commanding performance to defeat India by 76 runs in their first Super 8 clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The victory not only gave the Proteas redemption for their 2024 final heartbreak but also helped skipper Aiden Markram achieve a major personal milestone.

With this win, Aiden Markram went past Rohit Sharma in the list of most wins as captain in T20 World Cups.

The victory carried extra significance for Aiden Markram. This was his 13th win as captain in T20 World Cups, moving him ahead of Rohit Sharma, who has 12 wins.

In the all-time list of most wins as captain in T20 World Cups, MS Dhoni leads with 21 wins in 33 matches, followed by Kane Williamson with 14 wins in 21 matches.

Markram now stands third with 13 wins in just 14 matches. Rohit Sharma has 12 wins in 14 matches, while Daren Sammy (12 in 18 matches) and Dasun Shanaka (12 in 21 matches) follow on the list.

It is worth noting that Markram scored only 4 runs against India; his overall performance in the 2026 tournament has been impressive. In five innings, he has scored 182 runs at an average of 45.50 and a strike rate of 178.43. His best knock came against New Zealand, where he smashed 86 not out off 44 balls.

After winning the toss, Markram chose to bat first, a decision that proved crucial. South Africa had a shaky start as India picked up three early wickets. However, a brilliant 97-run partnership between David Miller and Dewald Brevis changed the momentum.

India's bowlers had some bright moments, especially Jasprit Bumrah, who delivered an outstanding spell of 3 for 15 in four overs. But the target of 188 proved too much for the Indian batting unit.

The Men in Blue eventually suffered their biggest defeat in T20 World Cup history, losing by 76 runs.

South Africa will next face the West Indies on February 26 in Ahmedabad before taking on Zimbabwe on March 1 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
