New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr delivered an outstanding performance during the second ODI between New Zealand Women and Zimbabwe Women in Dunedin on Sunday. Notably, in this match, Kerr produced one of the best bowling spells in history.

Most importantly, she took seven wickets in the game and helped her team dominate the opposition.

New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first. This decision proved to be very effective as the bowlers immediately put pressure on Zimbabwe’s batting lineup.

Zimbabwe struggle with the bat

Zimbabwe had a difficult time building their innings. Only a few batters managed to score runs, while most of the lineup failed to make a significant contribution. The team’s top scorer was Modester Mupachikwa, who made 32 runs from 51 balls.

Notably, Amelia Kerr led from the front and produced a record-breaking bowling performance. She took seven wickets for just 34 runs in 9.1 overs.

Meanwhile, her teammate Molly Penfold also supported her well by taking three wickets for 17 runs in just four overs. Due to this strong bowling attack, Zimbabwe Women were bowled out for only 102 runs in 29.1 overs.

Amelia Kerr breaks multiple records

It is worth mentioning that Amelia Kerr’s bowling performance created history in ODI cricket. She broke the record for the best bowling figures by a captain in ODI matches.

Previously, the women’s record was held by Mamatha Maben of India, who took six wickets for 10 runs against Sri Lanka in 2004.

Moreover, Amelia Kerr also surpassed the record across both men’s and women’s ODI cricket. The earlier record in men’s cricket belonged to Waqar Younis, who took seven wickets for 36 runs against England men's in 2001.

In addition, Amelia Kerr became the seventh bowler in women’s ODI history to take a seven-wicket haul. The best figures in women’s ODI cricket are held by Sajida Shah of Pakistan, who took seven wickets against Japan in 2003.

New Zealand chase the target comfortably

When New Zealand came out to bat, their main challenge was not the opposition bowlers but the changing weather conditions.

Nevertheless, the team started positively. Opener Izzy Gaze played an aggressive knock at the beginning and scored 20 runs from 22 balls. However, she was eventually dismissed by Audrey Mazvishaya.

Soon after, Amelia Kerr continued her brilliant day by contributing strongly with the bat as well. She played an attacking innings and scored 45 runs from 40 balls.

Although she missed out on a half-century after being dismissed by Christabel Chatonzwa, she had already taken her team very close to victory.

Maddy Green and Brooke Halliday completed the chase without any problems. As a result, New Zealand reached the target before the drinks break in the second innings, finishing the match in only 16.2 overs.
