West Indies' tour of Bangladesh has gotten off to a good start for the visitors, after they restricted the hosts to 272 runs in under 4 sessions of the first Test. With this, they keep the contest well-poised against a formidable Najmul Hossain Shanto-led unit.
Jomel Warrican was central to the early fight shown by the Caribbeans in Mirpur, as he claimed his fourth five-wicket haul in 26 Tests. With this, he has put West Indies in a promising position to eye their third win in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle.
Warrican's 5/53 vs BAN tops bowling charts
Jomel Warrican, who predominantly plays Test matches in the subcontinent, returned to the lineup as one of their frontline spinners in helpful Mirpur conditions. Despite being the last bowler used in the innings, Warrican bowled the most among the West Indies bowlers.
The left-arm orthodox bowler got rid of Bangladesh batter with the most Test runs in this lineup, Mominul Haque, with a tossed up delivery, which was hit straight to Joshua Bishop at mid-off to open his account. He backed it up with two prized wickets of the in-form captain Najmul Hossain Shanto just after the lunch and Mehidy Hasan Miraz early on Day 2.
The bowler went on to clean up the bowlers, as Taijul Islam edged an arm-ball to Amir Jangoo behind the wicket and trapped Shoriful Islam LBW on a golden duck. With this, Warrican became only the third West Indies spinner to pick a five-fer in Bangladesh.
Best bowling figures for West Indies spinners in Bangladesh:
- Jomel Warrican - 5/53 (23.4), Mirpur, 2026
- Rahkeem Cornwall - 5/74 (32), Mirpur, 2021
- Devendra Bishoo - 5/90 (25), Mirpur, 2011
Warrican continues to trouble Bangladesh
The 34-year-old spinner has been around for over a decade, and he has had a special liking for Bangladesh. They are Warrican's second-favourite opponents, with 23 wickets in 5 Test matches — he has 25 vs Pakistan.
All these five Tests have come away from home, where he averages just over 23 and concedes 2.74 runs per over. How Warrican fares in this series will be instrumental in West Indies' chances of potentially climbing up the WTC standings.
