Karn Sharma Retires After Playing With Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit In Same IPL Team

In a significant development, Indian leg-spinner Karn Sharma has announced his retirement from international and Indian domestic cricket on August 23, 2026. The 38-year-old announced his retirement on Saturday night after a UP T20 League match between Kanpur Superstars and Meerut Mavericks.

It is important to mention that Karn Sharma has been a prominent name in the IPL and has played alongside MS Dhoni (for CSK), Virat Kohli (for RCB), and Rohit Sharma (for MI).

Karn Sharma will play his final domestic match during his team's last game of the Lucknow leg on August 25. After that, he will step away from competitive Indian cricket and explore coaching and other roles within the game.

Karn Sharma Retires From International Cricket and Indian Domestic Cricket

Karn represented India in all three formats of international cricket. He played one Test, two ODIs and one T20I after making his international debut in 2014. He spent much of his career with Railways and also represented teams including Andhra and Vidarbha.

"I now want to retire... I am extremely grateful to my family, BCCI, Railways, UPCA, Andhra, Vidarbha Cricket Association and everyone who has supported me throughout this journey," Karn said while making the announcement. 

"After this, I will be available for coaching and other responsibilities related to the game of cricket." he added.

Karn Sharma's Career At A Glance

In first-class cricket, Karn has played 97 matches and has taken 270 wickets at an economy rate of 3.29. His FC career includes 12 four-wicket hauls, 14 five-wicket hauls, and two 10-wicket match hauls.

With the bat in first-class cricket, Karn has played 138 innings and scored 2,866 runs at an average of 22.74 and a strike rate of 49.41. In List A cricket, Karn has played 123 matches and taken 153 wickets at an economy rate of 4.79 and made 1827 runs with the bat at a strike rate of 96.76.

The star player has also played 191 T20 matches and has taken 168 wickets at an economy rate of 7.71.

How Did Karn Sharma Perform In IPL?

The star player from Meerut, Karn Sharma, has also enjoyed a notable IPL career. He has represented four teams: Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The leg-spinner has overall played 90 IPL matches in his career, in which he has scalped 83 wickets at an economy rate of 8.38. The IPL star last played for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025; in that season, he played in 6 matches and took 7 wickets at an economy rate of 8.53.

Karn Sharma also achieved a rare IPL record by winning the tournament three years in a row with three different teams.

This made him the first player to win three straight IPL titles while representing three separate franchises.
