Mitchell Starc produced a spell for the history books, but Shoriful Islam ensured Bangladesh had their own hero to celebrate on a dramatic opening day in Mackay.
Elsewhere, the BCCI's attempt to raise the value of India's title sponsorship ran into an unexpected roadblock, while a newly added Afghanistan series has created a scheduling headache for several Punjab-based cricketers.
Capping an action-packed day in world cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news stories that emerged on Saturday, August 22.
Mitchell Starc storms past Dale Steyn after historic six-wicket haul
Mitchell Starc created history at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. The Australian left-arm quick ripped through Bangladesh with figures of 6/12, beginning the match with the wicket of Shadman Islam from the very first delivery.
Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto soon followed, before Starc continued his rampage by removing Mominul Haque, Litton Das and Shoriful Islam.
His five-wicket haul came in just 22 deliveries as Bangladesh collapsed to 64 all out. The spell also pushed Starc beyond Dale Steyn's tally of 439 Test wickets. With 441 wickets now to his name, the Australian has moved into 10th place among the leading wicket-takers in Test history.
Shoriful Islam answers Starc's six-fer with a historic spell
If Starc's morning belonged to Australia, Bangladesh found their answer before the close of play. Shoriful Islam returned to the Bangladesh Test XI after recovering from a hamstring injury and immediately justified his selection with a sensational 6/35 against Australia.
The left-armer repeatedly troubled the Australian batters and left the hosts eight wickets down for 165 by stumps. His performance placed him among Bangladesh's best bowling performances in Test cricket in Australia, behind only some of the country's most celebrated names.

BCCI's ambitious title sponsorship plan hits an unexpected wall
The BCCI's attempt to extract more money from India's international cricket calendar has encountered a stumbling block. The board had fixed a base price of INR 4.85 crore per match for India's title sponsorship rights for the next two years. However, the deadline for bids passed without a suitable offer meeting its expectations.
The asking price represented a significant increase over the INR 4.2 crore per-match value of the previous agreement with IDFC First Bank. With around 35 international matches expected during the rights period, the BCCI had been targeting a substantial commercial windfall.
The lack of a suitable bidder has now forced the board to explore alternatives. Reports suggest that discussions have begun with potential companies including Google Gemini, Spinny and SBI Life.
India-Afghanistan T20I series creates Punjab cricket's biggest scheduling headache
The newly announced India-Afghanistan T20I series may have solved a gap in India's international calendar, but it has created another problem elsewhere.
India will face Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series beginning September 11 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The series was added after the BCCI and Afghanistan Cricket Board agreed to fill a previously open window in India's schedule.
The problem is that the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League is scheduled to run from August 30 to September 13. Several India-linked players are already associated with the tournament, including Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Arshdeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, Ramandeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar.
The conflict is particularly significant for Gill and Abhishek, who are marquee names associated with the Punjab tournament. Abhishek and Arshdeep also remain the two players among the group who are established members of India's T20I setup.
Mumbai Indians make major move to find their own Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Mumbai Indians have made an intriguing addition to their support staff ahead of IPL 2027 by bringing in Zubin Bharucha as their new Director of Performance. The appointment carries extra significance because Bharucha was part of the Rajasthan Royals setup that identified and nurtured Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the teenage sensation who took the IPL 2026 season by storm.
Bharucha will now work across Mumbai Indians' performance structure, with the franchise hoping his experience in identifying and developing young talent can strengthen their pipeline.
