Sarfaraz Khan is set to make his return to the Team India squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The underachieving batting prodigy was called up by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the tour as a replacement of injured Sai Sudharsan.

It is worth noting that just a couple of days ago, Sudharsan was ruled out of the national side for the Test series owing to his toe injury. For Sarfaraz, his upcoming call-up marks his return to the Indian Test side after a gap of nearly two years.

As one can expect, Sarfaraz’s return was met with much acclaim by Indian cricket fans online. Several fans took to X and congratulated the 28-year-old middle-order batter for earning a comeback call.

The BCCI has named Sarfaraz Khan as a replacement for injured Sai Sudharsan for the upcoming two-match Test tour of Sri Lanka.

The 28-year-old was included in the national squad by the BCCI selection committee on Sunday, August 9, i.e., roughly a week prior to the series-opening first Test at Galle.

Several Indian cricket fans celebrated the occasion by congratulating Sarfaraz for earning his much-deserved comeback call. Here is a look at how some of those Team India fans reacted to Sarfaraz’s Test return.

Will Sarfaraz Khan make it to India’s playing XI in Sri Lanka Tests?

While Sarfaraz Khan has been selected in Team India squad for the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, it remains to be seen if the prolific Mumbai batter will find a place in the national XI at any stage of the tour.

For instance, Sai Sudharsan usually bats at number three for the Indian cricket team. Earlier reports indicated that the Indian team management was considering Devdutt Padikkal to replace Sudharsan at the same position.

Padikkal is already in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian squad, and the left-handed batter recently plundered 142* off 164 balls against Sri Lanka Cricket XI at number three position in Colombo.

Sarfaraz, meanwhile, has largely batted at number six for India in his brief Test career. That said, the 28-year-old might still find a place in the playing XI in at least one of the two Tests in Sri Lanka.

When was the last time Sarfaraz played for India?

Sarfaraz Khan has so far played just six Test matches for Team India, despite being a prolific run machine for the Mumbai cricket team in domestic cricket.

Moreover, he played the last of those six Tests way back in November 2024 against New Zealand in Mumbai. The star middle-order batter was one of the casualties of India’s shambolic 0-3 whitewash to New Zealand in that series.

He has so far aggregated 371 runs in 11 innings for India in Tests at an average of 37.10, having plundered one ton and three fifties in the process.
