Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was included in India’s squad for the ongoing tour of England, yet the wait for his senior international debut continues. Despite a wave of public expectation and his record-breaking exploits in the IPL, the 15-year-old was not named in the playing eleven for the first T20I at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.

The decision means Sooryavanshi remains on the sidelines, just as he did during the preceding two-match series in Ireland. The India vs England contest carried extra weight after the visitors suffered a shock 0-2 whitewash in Belfast, piling pressure on captain Shreyas Iyer and the team management to start the five-match series with a win.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ignored for Ireland T20Is

Sooryavanshi’s non-selection is a continuation of the pattern seen in Ireland. On that tour, the left-hander was part of the travelling group but never entered the playing field.

The management stuck with the trusted opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in both games. Those matches ended in defeat, exposing India’s batting fragility on pitches offering extra bounce and movement.

Despite those setbacks, the think-tank chose not to turn to the youngster, preferring to back experienced heads. The silence around his exclusion knocked in the message that the prodigy would need to wait for his opportunity, regardless of the team’s struggles.

Gautam Gambhir & Co. keeping Sooryavanshi as a backup in the squad

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer appear aligned on a gradual approach. Sooryavanshi has been retained in the squad as a reserve option, training and travelling with the group, yet the team sheet for the series opener showed the same top-order structure.

The selection signals that the management sees the current batting unit as the first-choice line-up, with the teenager considered a long-term investment rather than an instant fix.

England captain Harry Brook added intrigue before the match by revealing that his side had done their homework on Sooryavanshi, preparing specific plans in case the debut arrived. “There's been a lot of digging behind the scenes to see what we can do to try and stop them from playing their best cricket,” Brook said.

His words confirmed that even opponents were bracing for the possibility, making the continued wait all the more striking. Yet, Sooryavanshi is waiting and the internet is not liking it.

Let’s take a look at how the internet reacted to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi being benched:

When the toss took place under overcast skies, India’s chosen eleven featured only established names. Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened, with Ishan Kishan taking the wicketkeeping gloves.

Shreyas Iyer led the side and was followed by Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, and all-rounder Axar Patel. The bowling attack comprised Harshit Rana, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, and Varun Chakaravarthy, who returned after recovering from a left foot injury.

There was no debutant, no surprise inclusion, and no place for Sooryavanshi. India won the toss and opted to bat first on a surface that had a decent covering of grass.

India looks forward to bounce back from Ireland T20Is

The 0-2 loss in Ireland left India with plenty to address. The bowling unit, led by Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, had shown discipline, but the batters failed to chase totals of 180 and 150 on successive occasions.

Abhishek Sharma’s aggressive start in the first game and Tilak Varma’s resistance in the second were rare bright spots in an otherwise below-par collective display.

Iyer, captaining the T20 side for only the second series, described the Ireland results as history and stressed that the team had learned from those outings. “It is fine. The Ireland series is history. We got to learn from it,” he said at the toss.

England, too, entered the contest with something to prove after a 1-2 Test series defeat against New Zealand and the unexpected international retirement of Ben Stokes. Both teams had veteran cores, with the hosts fielding a line-up loaded with over 650 caps.
