The 2nd ODI between India and New Zealand turned out to be an edge of the seat thriller. The Mitchell Santner-led side, batting first, put just 134 runs on the board. In reply, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 112/7.

Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Naman Dhir showed promise, but latter’s dismissal sparked controversy. Dhir, who was playing 3rd ODI match of his career, returned to the pavillion after scoring 12 (16), which featured a couple of fours.

Tim Seifert’s Catch Sparks Controversy

On the 4th ball of the 25th over, Naman Dhir pulled a back-of-a-length delivery, and it seemed that he got the connection and the ball was travelling for a six. However, much to everyone’s dismay, the MI star found Tim Seifert in the field.

The Kiwi opener was standing deep and collected the catch cleanly. However, the replay showed that he was too close to the boundary rope, which prompted the third umpire to have a close look at the catch. After multiple replays and several angles, the umpire found no conclusive evidence of Seifert’s feet touching the boundary ropes.

Dhir was declared out, but the catch sparked controversy because many suspected foul play. Notably, fans claimed that the boundary ropes were pushed back and the third umpire should have looked at that.

Fans React To Naman Dhir’s Catch

Fans slammed the officials and remarked that Naman Dhir should not have been declared out.  Here are some of the reactions.

"That Naman Dhir dismissal was very interesting. The fielder's leg was placed exactly where one boundary cushion was slightly pushed back more than the others."

"Naman Dhir got a poor third umpiring decision. The ball on which he was given out was a six in fact."

"Naman Dhir has got a rough 3rd Umpiring decision here! The boundary cushions seemed to be already pushed outside even before the Catch was being taken."

Naman Dhir's Series So Far

In the first two ODIs, Naman Dhir has scored just 17 runs in 2 innings. Further, in the T20I series, the Mumbai Indians star scored 138 runs in 5 innings.  Dhir got to bowl in the T20I series but is yet to roll his arms over in the ODIs.

Nonetheless, Dhir is still searching for his maiden big score in international cricket.
