Virat Kohli gets thrashed for actions of his bodyguard [Source: X and Screengrabs]
Security personnel accompanying high-profile cricketers are expected to protect players and maintain order during public appearances.
However, there is a clear line between ensuring security and interfering with accredited media personnel carrying out their professional duties.
That line has now become the centre of a major controversy involving Virat Kohli's alleged personal bodyguard during India's ongoing England tour.
The incident has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with several journalists and fans demanding that the BCCI investigate the matter and clarify whether a centrally-contracted Indian player is even permitted to travel with a personal bodyguard on an overseas tour.
Virat Kohli's personal bodyguard accused of abusing accredited journalist
A major controversy erupted after a journalist alleged that Virat Kohli's personal bodyguard verbally abused and intimidated him despite the journalist standing inside the designated media zone with a valid accreditation card.
According to the allegations shared by Subhayan Chakraborty of RevSportz and Abhishek Tripathi of Jagran News, respectively, the journalist was capturing visuals of the Indian team's departure while standing alongside other accredited members of the media and fans.

After Virat Kohli had already boarded the team bus, the bodyguard allegedly approached the journalist and repeatedly shouted.
The journalist reportedly informed the security personnel that he was an accredited member of the media and even possessed his official accreditation card.
However, the bodyguard allegedly responded while continuing to abuse him in the name of protecting Indian players.
It was also claimed that the same bodyguard had previously misbehaved with media personnel and again crossed the line despite the player he was guarding having already entered the team bus.
The alleged incident has since gone viral across social media platforms, with many questioning why an accredited journalist was allegedly prevented from performing his duties while standing inside an authorised media area.
The internet has risen up against the action and reacted strongly against the behaviour:
Oh Virat, now he's gonna get cursed out over this too😭😭😭 @Vaibhav cricfan
I thought Virat Kohli moved to London so that he could freely move around without getting noticed. So why have a bodyguard to attract all the attention. Really dont get Kohli. @Karan
Does BCCI allow personal bodyguards for players on tours?
The controversy has become even bigger because the BCCI's existing disciplinary framework reportedly does not permit centrally-contracted Indian players to travel with personal security guards during overseas tours.
Under the board's 10-point disciplinary guidelines introduced to maintain discipline, security and team culture, players are prohibited from travelling with personal staff, including private security personnel, chefs and stylists.
Instead, the Indian team is provided with official security arrangements managed entirely by the BCCI and local authorities.
The policy was introduced to maintain a unified team environment, avoid logistical complications and ensure that all security protocols remain under the control of the board.
Will the BCCI take action on Virat Kohli?
As of now, the BCCI has not issued any official statement regarding the incident, nor has Virat Kohli commented publicly on the allegations.
However, if it is established that a centrally-contracted player travelled with an unauthorised personal bodyguard in violation of the board's disciplinary framework, the matter is likely to be reviewed internally by the team management and BCCI officials.
The board's current policy clearly states that players must rely solely on the official security arrangements provided by the BCCI during overseas tours.
Any violation of these regulations can invite disciplinary proceedings under the central contract guidelines, with penalties ranging from warnings and financial sanctions to more severe action depending on the findings of the inquiry.
