Rohit Sharma Notches Up Huge Record Vs England, Surpasses MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant

Rohit Sharma unleashed his fury against England in the second ODI of India’s three-match away series. Opening the innings at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the legendary opener employed a cautious start with partner Shubman Gill before resorting to his usual fireworks when joined by Virat Kohli.

Through the course of his innings, the former Indian captain also scaled a huge national record against the England cricket team across all formats of the game. The cricketer even surpassed wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, and extended his lead over the likes of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni in the process.

Rohit Sharma scripts huge record vs England

Shortly after getting joined by Virat Kohli at the crease, Indian opener Rohit Sharma struck a huge six off England’s Gus Atkinson in the 12th over of the game. The six marked the 364th maximum of Sharma’s glittering ODI career, and the 647th overall of his international journey. 

Out of his 647 career sixes, the 39-year-old has struck 56 of those sixes against England alone across all forms of the game. He has now surpassed wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as India’s leading six-hitter against England in all three formats combined.

Moreover, Rohit also extended his lead over former national teammates Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. Here is a look at four Indian players with the highest number of sixes to their names in international cricket against England.

Rohit Sharma inches closer to Jos Buttler

The legendary Indian opener also inched closer to former England captain Jos Buttler in terms of hitting the highest number of sixes overall in India vs England international matches. As of now, Buttler is topping the list with 58 maximums to his name in just 78 international innings.

Sharma, meanwhile, has reached 56 sixes in just 66 innings and is now trailing Buttler by just two maximums in the all-time India vs England six-hitting list. 

Rohit Sharma record vs England

Rohit Sharma has so far accrued 56 sixes against England in international cricket. He has muscled 18 of those maximums in just 15 T20I innings, and another 22 in 25 ODI outings. 

In Test cricket, Sharma launched another 16 sixes against England in 26 innings. Batting wise, the cricketer has minted close to 2,500 international runs against the same opponent in 66 innings at a prolific average of 44.50.

India loses both openers after settled starts

Rohit eventually made his way back to the dugout for 26 to his name from 47 balls with a boundary and a six in his innings. Earlier, captain Shubman Gill made 31 off 30 before he was dismissed by Gus Atkinson. 

Sharma’s departure called for an early arrival of comeback man Ishan Kishan at number four. Virat Kohli, batting at number three, raced to 36* off 30 balls by the time of publishing as India reached 104-2 in 18 overs.
