Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League has not only been a platform for the Indian talent pool but has also given several overseas cricketers a chance to showcase their mettle as a player and as a coach.
Over the years, a lot of legendary cricketers, right after retiring, took over the reins as the head coach for the same franchises the played for. That said, in this article, take a look at five players who both played and coached the same IPL team.
5 Cricketers Who Coached and Played For The Same IPL Team
5) Virender Sehwag - Kings XI Punjab
Virender Sehwag played two seasons for Kings XI Punjab, from 2014 to 2015. He scored a total of 554 runs in 25 matches. His standout moment was a monstrous 122 off 58 balls against the Chennai Super Kings in 2014, his highest IPL score.
Only a year after the dashing Indian opener called curtains to all forms of international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL) on October 20, 2015, his IPL franchise, Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), roped in Virender Sehwag as a mentor for the 2016 season.
The very next season, Sehwag was given additional responsibilities as the head of cricket operations in 2017.
However, although Sehwag was not the designated head coach of the KXIP, he was given the free hand to make decisions and coach the team. This is due to his ability to instil commendable fearless aggression and mental toughness in young players.
Sehwag oversaw team strategy and the auction. The team finished 8th in 2016 and 7th in 2018. The best campaign was in 2017, when the team showed improvement but narrowly missed the playoffs, finishing 5th.
4) Brendon McCullum - Kolkata Knight Riders
McCullum defined the launch of the IPL on April 18, 2008, by scoring a then-record 158 not out against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
His explosive innings featured 13 sixes and 10 fours, setting the tone for T20 cricket and propelling KKR to a massive 140-run victory. His innings defined the league’s fearless brand of cricket.
Years later, he returned as Kolkata Knight Riders’ head coach, bringing his aggressive “Bazball” philosophy to the franchise. Though his stint was mixed, his reputation as a transformative coach remains intact.

The former New Zealand batter served as the head coach of the KKR for three IPL seasons from 2020 to 2022. Under his tenure, the team experienced mixed results, characterised by inconsistency but highlighted by a brilliant run to the IPL final in 2021.
3) Daniel Vettori - Royal Challengers Bengaluru
The current Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach, Daniel Vettori, brings coaching experience, having helmed Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018.
Before the coaching stint, Vettori played a multifaceted role for RCB, serving as a crucial left-arm spinner and captain before successfully transitioning into the franchise's Head Coach. Across his 22 IPL playing matches for RCB, he took 17 wickets with a disciplined economy rate of 6.375.
After retiring, Vettori took over the reins from Ray Jennings. During his coaching tenure, RCB developed an aggressive batting culture, highlighted by their historic 2016 season, where they finished as runners-up.
Though the team often struggled to balance their explosive batting with their bowling depth, he focused on building a balanced squad and nurturing young talent.
The most notable names that gained Vettori’s guidance and went on to make a name for themselves are KL Rahul, Mohammad Siraj, and Yuzvendra Chahal.
2) Rahul Dravid - Rajasthan Royals
Having served Rajasthan Royals as a player, mentor, and head coach in the Indian Premier League, Rahul Dravid’s story has been intertwined with the Jaipur team for more than a decade.
‘The Wall’ of Indian cricket, Dravid joined the Royals in 2011, spending his first season under the captaincy of Shane Warne before taking over the reins himself. He captained the side until 2013 and then continued his association with the team as a mentor until 2015. After nearly a decade away, he returned as head coach after IPL 2024.
Before parting ways with RR before the IPL 2026, his tenure saw youngsters like Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson, Yashaswi Jaiswal, and Riyan Parag.
Moreover, a local talent, Pravin Tambe, who had never played top-level cricket before joining the side, flourished at the RR during Dravid’s tenure.
1) Stephen Fleming - Chennai Super Kings
Former New Zealand batter Stephen Fleming played as a top-order batter for Chennai Super Kings during the inaugural IPL season in 2008. In his only IPL season, Fleming played 10 games and scored 196 runs to help the team reach the final. Following his playing stint, he transitioned to coaching.
Spanning nearly two decades at CSK in the IPL, the Fleming guided CSK through a golden era before mutually parting ways in July 2026.
Under Fleming, the ‘Yellow Army’ won 5 IPL titles along with 2 Champions League T20 crowns. Apart from this, under his leadership, the franchise reached the playoffs a record 12 times and featured in the 10 IPL Finals.
