South Africa received a nine-wicket humbling at the hands of New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Defending 170 for a place in the finals, South African bowlers failed to contain Finn Allen on the big day at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Batting first, senior man David Miller himself came up short, scoring a sluggish run-a-ball six before mistiming one off New Zealand spinner Rachin Ravindra. After the match, Miller became the center of criticism from Indian fans especially after his certain controversial statement from the past re-surfaced on social media.

Why are India fans trolling David Miller?

Back in March 2025, the South Africa team lost to New Zealand in the second semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy in Lahore. Following his team’s exit, David Miller expressed his disappointment with the tournament’s scheduling, especially considering the Proteas played their four matches of the competition in three different venues.

Ahead of the final between India and New Zealand, Miller stated that he will be backing the ‘Black Caps’. While the seasoned South African did not reveal any specific reason for his stance, many interpreted it as a subtle dig at India playing all their matches at a single venue during the tournament.

Fast forward to the T20 World Cup 2026, and the Indian team finds itself as the most travelling side in the competition. On the other hand, the Proteas played five of their first six matches at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Losing to the same team in the semi-final that David Miller once supported in the past, his Champions Trophy remarks sparked a wave of abuse, trolling and criticism from Indian fans on social media.

SA vs NZ semi-final: As it happened

Batting first, South Africa lost Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton in the second over of the match to Cole McConchie. Captain Aiden Markram, well-set Dewald Brevis and hard-hitting David Miller also failed to lead South Africa’s recovery as they soon collapsed to 77-5 around the halfway stage of the innings.

Marco Jansen counterattacked for the Proteas in the backend with a fiery 30-ball 55*. The lanky all-rounder shared a 73-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs as South Africa listed a respectable 169-8 in 20 overs.

In response, New Zealand openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen broke South Africa’s back with their 117-run partnership in just 9.1 overs. While Seifert smoked 58 off just 33 balls, Allen shattered a slew of batting records with his whirlwind 33-ball century. The right-handed opener blasted eight huge sixes and 10 boundaries, including one to notch up the winning runs for New Zealand in just 12.5 overs.

South Africa to go home with yet another knockout defeat

South Africa’s never-ending circle with heartbreaks in the knockouts of ICC white-ball events never seems to end. With yet another defeat in a semi-final, the Proteas will now be left to reflect on another campaign that slipped away at the final hurdle.

Their latest defeat comes on the back of the 2023 World Cup semi-final loss to Australia, the 2024 T20 World Cup final choke against India, and the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final humbling at the hands of New Zealand.
