Mohsin Naqvi and Younis Khan - (Source: AFP)
On Monday, June 15, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi concluded a press conference, which was also attended by white-ball head coach Mike Hessen and Pakistan’s director of cricket Aaqib Javed. The idea behind the presser was to introduce a revamped central contract. However, the 47-year-old was also asked about Younis Khan, rumoured to be the next head coach.
For the unversed, there were reports that Pakistan legend Younis Khan is all set to replace Sarfaraz Ahmed as the next red-ball head coach. Notably, Pakistan are struggling in Tests, and they recently suffered a series defeat against Bangladesh, dropping to 8th on the WTC standings.
Mohsin Naqvi Refutes Reports Of Appointing Younis Khan
During the presser, Mohsin Naqvi addressed the rumour and remarked that there is no such development. The PCB chairman didn’t directly put the rumours to rest, but stated that he too had heard about the development through the media.
However, Mohsin Naqvi admitted that he met Younis Khan and revealed that it was regarding a few vacancies in the support staff, but not for the head coach role.
"A few days ago, a headline was circulating that Younis Khan, who has been appointed as head coach or mentor of the Test team—whatever the exact role is—I only come to know such things through the channel," Naqvi said.

"We did not have any such agenda in advance. What can I say about it? If the news was not available on that day, and it was published in the morning, then I am not at fault for that," he added.
Mohsin Naqvi Talks About Re-Hiring Mohammad Hafeez
Besides, Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez were also reported to rejoin the PCB as part of the support staff. Mohsin Naqvi stated that he indeed met Hafeez to bring him to the Pakistan team.
“As for Hafeez, we were definitely discussing where we had vacancies and in which areas we needed people. But it felt very strange when the news came out that he had been appointed head coach, while on the other hand, Sarfaraz is working in one role, and such reports are circulating at the same time," he said.
Mohammed Hafeez To Be Back For His 2nd Stint
Notably, in November 2023, Mohammad Hafeez joined the Pakistan team as a team director and also interim head coach for Australia and New Zealand series.
It marked a new era in Pakistan cricket because Babar Azam had resigned as the captain, and Shaheen Afridi was named ODI captain, while Shan Masood was leading the red-ball side.
Hafeez's stint lasted just four months, and he was sacked from his role in February 2024 following poor results. Hence, it would be a surprise to see if the former Pakistan opener agrees to PCB’s proposal and return to the Pakistan set-up for a second stint.
At present, there is a 50-day gap in Pakistan’s cricket calendar as they will next tour the West Indies in August 2026 for a Test series.
