Sri Lanka vs India - (Source: ScreenGrab/X.com)
On Monday, India A and Sri Lanka A locked horns for the 2nd time in the ongoing tri-series involving Afghanistan. It is a crucial game because the winner will set foot in the final. However, both teams are hellbent on making schoolboy errors.
Notably, India A, batting first, put 260 runs on the board, while Sri Lanka, in reply, started their innings with already 10 runs added to their team total. The fans were confused to see the scoreboard reading 10/0 without a single ball bowled. Therefore, this article will shed light on the exact reason behind it.
Sri Lanka Awarded 10 Penalty Runs For India Mistake
For the unversed, Sri Lanka were awarded 10 penalty runs because of two massive errors from Vipraj Nigam. The UP-based cricketer was found guilty of walking at the centre of the pitch, dubbed the danger line.
India, batting first, lost 7 wickets for just 143 runs on the board, which is when Vipraj Nigam walked to bat. The Delhi Capitals star had a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. In the effort of adding runs for his team, Vipraj forgot the basic rules of cricket and committed this sin thrice in the match.
Vipraj Nigam Warned Thrice By Umpires For Walking On The Danger Line
Firstly, the on-field umpire let him go with a verbal warning. However, it had no impact on the India A all-rounder, as he committed the sin again on the 4th ball of the 35th over. Vipraj Nigam casually played a shot towards cover and casually jogged down to the non-strikers' end through the danger line.

This time around, the umpire signalled five penalty runs, which means that Sri Lanka will start their innings with 5 runs already on the scoreboard.
Now, two overs later, on the 5th ball of the 39th over, Vipraj repeated his error and this time around, the umpire again signalled to the fourth umpire that 5 more runs have been added to Sri Lanka’s total, meaning that the hosts would start their innings with 10/0 on the scoreboard without a ball bowled.
India too awarded 5 Penalty Runs
Despite the unfair play by Vipraj Nigam, he stitched a crucial 104 run stand with Suryansh Shedge for the 8th wicket. Eventually, the duo helped India put 265 runs on the board. Interestingly, India too were awarded 5 penalty runs.
In the 16th over, Kugadas Mathulan bowled a delivery that went down the leg side to Ayush Badoni. The umpire called it a wide. However, the drama didn’t end there.
Sri Lankan wicketkeeper Dickwella failed to gather the ball, and then it struck the helmet placed on the ground behind him. Under the Laws of Cricket, if the ball in play hits a helmet belonging to the fielding side that is placed on the ground, the batting side is awarded a 5-run penalty.
