Batting with the tail can be tricky, especially during the slog overs of an innings. A fine demonstration of the same recently unfurled during India A’s tri-series match against hosts Sri Lanka A at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on Monday, June 15.
During the 48th over of the India A innings, Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella and fast bowler Mohamed Shiraz pulled off an easy run out to get rid of the number nine batter Vipraj Nigam under the most freakish circumstances.
India A tail pulls off ‘classic Pakistan running’ vs Sri Lanka A
In one of the most bizarre run outs, India A’s number nine Vipraj Nigam lost his wicket after Suryansh Shedge reached the striker’s end, at a time when Nigam did not even leave his crease.
Sri Lanka A fast bowler Mohamed Shiraz fired a yorker which went between Vipraj Nigam's legs down the leg side, and was fittingly not called a wide by the on-field umpire. The Indian batter, however, seemed dumbfounded over the call as he was looking down on the pitch.

At the same time, Vipraj Nigam's non-strike partner Suryansh Shedge took off for a bye. As soon as Vipraj saw Suryansh in trouble, he sacrifices his own wicket. The comical mix-up between the two India A batters pretty much mirrored the sort of chaotic running between the wickets that has often left past Pakistan teams red-faced over the years.
The Sri Lanka A players made full use of the opportunity as Shiraz trapped Vipraj Nigam whole 22 yards short of his crease. The number nine batter made a long walk back towards the sheds after cracking 51 runs from just 49 balls with six boundaries.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fails again, India A folded up for 265
India A batted first in their must-win match against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla, and folded up for just 265 in 49.2 overs. Firebrand opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again failed to go big in the ongoing Sri Lanka A tri-series, scoring just 21 off 14 balls with three boundaries and a six. Ruturaj Gaikwad also failed to go beyond 37, and captain Tilak Varma made just 23 off 32 balls.
Crashing down to 143-7 in 32.1 overs, Suryansh Shedge and number nine Vipraj Nigam shared a fighting 104-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Both cricketers fired courageous half-centuries, with the former top-scoring in the innings with his 72-run knock from 66 balls.
For Sri Lanka A, Mohamed Shiraz (3-33) and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth (3-26) both picked up three wickets each in the innings.
India give away ten penalty runs
The mix up between Suryansh Shedge and number nine Vipraj Nigam was not the only bizarre instance from the India A innings against Sri Lanka A. At one stage of the innings, the ball hit the wicketkeeper’s helmet behind the stumps, prompting umpires to award five penalty runs to the Indian team.
The incident occurred in the 16th over when Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella failed to gather the ball cleanly. After that, Vipraj Nigam was warned once and then India A was penalized twice for dangerously running on the pitch, leading to Sri Lanka A starting the innings at 10-0 without a ball being bowled.
