As the IPL enters its decisive final phase, second-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad and third-ranked Gujarat Titans prepare for a critical showdown in Ahmedabad today, May 12. The GT vs SRH IPL 2026 match could prove to be pivotal in shaping the playoff race.
The Shubman Gill-led GT appear slightly better placed after recovering from a slow start to the season with a string of crucial wins, including a commanding 77-run victory over Rajasthan Royals, which lifted them to third on the points table.
With the top three sides, RCB, SRH, and GT, all locked on 14 points, net run rate could become a decisive factor in the race for the playoffs, making it imperative for SRH to improve theirs in front of their home crowd.
Thus, Titans’ captain Shubman Gill would want all his players fully fit and match-ready.
That being said, in this article, let’s explore whether the Gujarat Titans’ trusted allrounder, Washington Sundar, will play in the GT vs SRH IPL match today.
What happened to Washington Sundar?
GT dealt with a heavy blow in their most recent IPL 2026 outing against Rajasthan Royals on May 9, as Washington Sundar had to be taken off the field due to an injury.
The incident occurred on the last ball of the 12th over when Sundar, fielding at short cover, was struck on the wrist, after which the physios took him out of the field. It is assumed that Sundar failed to judge the uneven bounce and thus was struck unexpectedly.

It is worth noting that wrist injuries are difficult to recover from because the wrist is an incredibly intricate, high-use joint with limited blood flow, making it prone to chronic reinjury and slow healing. Hence, leaving Sundar’s availability in doubt.
Washington Sundar’s love-hate relationship with injuries
The Indian and Gujarat Titans’ all-rounder, Washington Sundar, has an extensive history of injuries. Sundar has missed more cricket due to injury than almost any other young Indian player.
List of injuries and illnesses that have curtailed Sundar’s career:
- Rib Injury/Side Strain in January-February 2026
- Hamstring Injury in February 2022
- Finger/Hand Injury in 2021
- COVID-19 in January 2022
- IPL 2023 Absence due to recurring hamstring Injury
- Wrist injury during IPL 2026
Will Washington Sundar play today’s IPL 2026 match against SRH?
It is worth noting that, as of mid-IPL 2026, Washington Sundar is not bowling regularly for the GT. According to their assistant coach Parthiv Patel, this is primarily due to tactical, condition-based, and matchup-driven decisions by the team management, rather than fitness issues. He has been utilised mostly as a middle-order batter, scoring 246 runs in 11 innings.
Now talking about his availability for the upcoming fixture.
While there has been no recent update provided by Gujarat Titans’ contingent, Washington Sundar is expected to play in today’s GT vs SRH match. Sundar, who was acquired by GT for ₹3.2 crore at the 2025 auction, has been a regular member of their side in the 2026 season.
