Shubman Gill Breaks Silence On Ankle Injury; Issues Fresh Update

Shubman Gill led Gujarat Titans to a massive 77-run win over Rajasthan Royals in their IPL 2026 clash on Saturday, May 9.

The Gujarat skipper not only impressed with the bat but also shared an important fitness update after the match. Notably, Shubman Gill appeared to be in discomfort while batting and was seen struggling with his foot during the innings. 

Batting first, Gujarat Titans posted a huge total of 229/4 at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The innings was once again built around the brilliant opening partnership between Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. 

Shubman Gill And Sai Sudharsan Build Another Historic Partnership

Notably, Shubman Gill played a sensational knock of 84 runs off just 44 balls. His innings included nine boundaries and three sixes as he mixed elegant strokeplay with aggressive batting. 

On the other hand, Sudharsan supported him perfectly with a fluent 55 off 36 deliveries. Together, they added 118 runs for the opening wicket and completely put Rajasthan Royals under pressure early in the game.

After the strong opening stand, Gujarat’s middle order made full use of the momentum. Washington Sundar contributed a quick 37 runs from 20 balls, while Jos Buttler scored 13 off 10 deliveries. Later, Rahul Tewatia provided the finishing touch with a powerful 14 runs from just four balls.

For Rajasthan Royals, Brijesh Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/47 in four overs. Yash Raj Punja and Ravindra Jadeja picked up one wicket each.

Rajasthan Royals Fail To Chase Massive Target

In response, Rajasthan Royals began their chase aggressively through Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s quick 36 off 16 balls and Dhruv Jurel’s 24 off 10 deliveries, they failed to build partnerships. Notably, Jadeja fought hard with 38 runs from 25 balls, but the rest of the batting lineup struggled badly.

Gujarat Titans bowlers dominated the second innings completely. Rashid Khan delivered a match-winning spell of 4/33, while Jason Holder picked up 3/12. Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj also contributed with wickets as Rajasthan were bowled out for 152 in just 16.3 overs.

Shubman Gill Reveals Injury Update

Notably, despite his outstanding innings, Shubman Gill revealed after the match that he had suffered an ankle twist while running between the wickets. However, he continued batting and helped his team reach a commanding total.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Shubman Gill said, “While taking run, I think I twisted my ankle a little bit. It was painful. But I think after half an hour or so, it settled down.”

The Gujarat captain also expressed happiness over the team’s all-round performance. He said, “Very happy (for the win). Next game is at home and hopefully we will have another good match.”

The update came as a major relief for Gujarat Titans fans, especially because Gill has struggled with injuries in recent months.

Gill further added that this was Gujarat Titans’ most complete performance of the season so far. “Yeah, definitely (perfect match). Even before this match, we had a conversation that till now I don't think we had a perfect match. I think this was a clean win for us. We got 10-15 extra, it was not easy to hit sixes or boundaries (against the spinners).”

Impact On The IPL 2026 Points Table 

The emphatic win has boosted Gujarat Titans’ campaign in IPL 2026. GT climbed to second place on the points table with seven wins and four losses, taking their tally to 14 points. Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals slipped to fifth position after their fifth defeat of the season.
