Delhi Capitals defeated Punjab Kings in a nail-biter to keep their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive. The team needed 211 to win the game, and the Delhi side produced a remarkable chase to seal the win.

Axar Patel, David Miller, and Ashutosh Sharma were the stars as Punjab Kings suffered their fourth straight loss in the IPL.

Delhi Capitals keeps IPL playoffs hopes alive

In a must-win game to keep their IPL playoff hopes alive, Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to field first. The decision backfired as Priyansh Arya, the Punjab batter, took DC bowlers to the cleaners.

The southpaw smashed a 24-ball fifty, and Punjab registered the fastest team fifty this season (16 balls). However, the run-rate slowed down once Priyansh was dismissed as DC tried to claw back in the contest.

However, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Cooper Connolly forged a strong partnership and took the PBKS mantle forward. While Connolly struggled for quickfire runs, Iyer looked in control as the captain smacked a brilliant fifty to help the team post 210.

In reply, DC had a horrendous start with Abishek Porel and KL Rahul getting dismissed cheaply. Sahil Parakh followed them back to the pavilion before Axar Patel started his little counter-attacking innings.

The DC captain, who had been woefully out of form, hammered 56 off 30 balls to keep DC alive in the chase. David Miller gave the perfect finishing touches , and Ashutosh Sharma was the icing on the cake as DC won the game.

How Delhi Capitals have performed in IPL 2026 so far

It has been yet another topsy-turvy IPL campaign for the Delhi Capitals side, who entered the season with a lot of hope, but once again failed to deliver on the field. They had a solid batting core and a brilliant bowling lineup, but the Capitals never really found their best playing XI.

The Axar Patel-led side started the IPL 2026 with two commanding wins over LSG and Mumbai Indians, and it seemed everything was going according to their plans before disaster struck.

The franchise quickly lost back-to-back matches against GT and CSK, and cracks started to open up in the side. They managed to narrowly edge past RCB in a thriller, before losing three back-to-back matches against SRH, PBKS, and RCB.

The Delhi-based side bounced back to defeat Rajasthan Royals, but couldn’t continue the momentum as CSK and KKR inflicted heavy defeats to push DC to the verge of IPL elimination. The side needed to win all their remaining matches to stay alive in the playoff race, and they crossed the first hurdle by beating Punjab Kings.

How Delhi Capitals can still qualify for IPL playoffs

With this win, DC have jumped to seventh position, a place above KKR. The Axar Patel-led side now registered 5 wins out of 12, and has 10 points in their bag.

However, despite the win, the side still has a mountain to climb in its remaining IPL matches. Their biggest problem is their net run-rate, which is -0.993. The side has two matches left, and they need to win both matches, and at the same time, they need to improve their negative net run-rate.

Even if they win the next two fixtures, it won’t guarantee a place in the playoffs, as they’ll be stranded at 14 points, which might not be enough for them. The Delhi side needs other results to go in their favour as well.
