The India tour of Bangladesh remains a major headache for both nations, as the series is highly unlikely to take place at the moment. There were some encouraging signs that both nations could resolve their disputes and agree to play the white-ball tour, but at the moment, things have gone from bad to worse.

Initially, the tour was set to take place in 2025, but geopolitical tensions led to the postponement of the India vs Bangladesh white-ball series, and now there is the latest press conference involving Shakib Al Hasan and former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that could create a roadblock for the tour.

On August 5, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister addressed the media for the first time since her government was removed. Shakib Al Hasan also joined the event virtually while he was in Sri Lanka due to a prior cricket commitment.

Shakib’s interaction with Sheikh Hasina garnered considerable interest, and it was followed by a strong reaction in Bangladesh due to the geopolitical nature of the event.

The latest diplomatic tension and the meeting involving Sheikh Hasina and Shakib Al Hasan could prove to be a major setback for the BCB, which had been hoping to rebuild cricketing ties with India.

The incident has led to reports that the white-ball series between India and Bangladesh could be called off. Will the abandonment of the series have any impact on Bangladesh’s chances to qualify for the 2027 ODI World Cup?

According to the ICC rules, the top eight-ranked ODI teams by September 30, 2026, will qualify for the marquee 2027 ODI World Cup, set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Interestingly, from now till the qualification cut-off date, the Tigers won’t play any more ODI matches (if the India series gets officially cancelled).

The Asian side would have played three more ODI matches (Had the India series gone through), but now, the team doesn’t have any ODI matches left.

Meanwhile, even if the ODI series gets cancelled, it won’t alter Bangladesh’s position in the ODI rankings, and won’t affect their qualification chances either.

Currently, Bangladesh are ninth in the ODI rankings, and only the top eight ranked teams will go through directly to the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, one of the top eight ranked teams is South Africa, the hosts of the World Cup.

The Proteas will get direct qualification, and apart from them, the next-best eight teams will also qualify. With the Tigers being ninth in the ODI rankings, the team will also qualify directly for the marquee ICC event.

How strong are Bangladesh's chances in ODI World Cup 2027?

The South African conditions demand teams to have quality pacers in their ranks, and the Tigers possess genuine quick bowlers who can wreak havoc on South African pitches.

Even the Zimbabwean pitches as of late have been pace-supportive, and the Bangladesh bowlers will relish bowling on such surfaces. In Nahid Rana, the Asian side has a tearaway pacer who has broken several records as of late.

The side also boasts Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, and other quality pace bowlers to trouble the best in the business. If their batting clicks, the squad genuinely has a chance to make it to the semis.
