Factors That Can Shut Sarfaraz Khan's Selection Doors For India vs Sri Lanka Test Series 2026

Team India sustained a major setback as their first-choice number three batter Sai Sudharsan was ruled out of the Test series against Sri Lanka. Sudharsan had sustained a toe injury during the Indian A side's travel to Sri Lanka earlier this year. 

Although the southpaw had been rehabilitating at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, he couldn't recover in time, eventually missing the India tour of Sri Lanka 2026. After Sudharsan's chances of featuring in the India vs Sri Lanka Tests became out of the equation, Sarfaraz Khan took a wildcard entry into the list of probables who could replace the injured batter.

With Sai Sudharsan getting sidelined from the India vs Sri Lanka Test series, reports suggested that the BCCI would pick either Sarfaraz Khan or Shaik Rasheed as his replacement. Given that Sarfaraz is significantly more experienced than Rasheed, anyone would expect the Mumbai batter to enter India's Test squad vs Sri Lanka as Sai Sudharsan's replacement. 

However, three major factors could possibly deny Sarfaraz Khan a spot in the Indian Test side despite Sudharsan's untimely injury. 

1. Sai Sudharsan is a top order player, Sarfaraz has played in middle order

Sai Sudharsan showcased remarkable batting form for India-A in Sri Lanka earlier this year. The southpaw amassed 332 runs, including two hundreds, across four innings at an average of 110.67. However, he scored those runs at the top order and also bats at number three for India in Test cricket. 

On the contrary, Sarfaraz Khan has played all his eleven innings at the middle order from 4 to 8 batting positions. In fact, the number four slot has been his earliest batting position for Mumbai in the domestic circuit for quite a while now. 

Given that the role of a top-order batter is entirely different from that of a middle-order player, the BCCI could prefer a genuine top-order player, and as a result, Sarfaraz could miss out on selection in the India Test squad vs Sri Lanka. 

2. The success of India's allrounders in the warm-up match

The warm-up match between the Indian team and the Sri Lanka-XI witnessed run fest from both teams on a relatively placid batting surface. After the Lankans declared their first innings on 363 for 8, India lost the crucial wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the very first over. 

While left-arm pace got rid of Jaiswal yet again, KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal set the foundation for India's heroic comeback. Padikkal slammed 142 runs before India's all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain added handy runs to the visitors' total. 

Jadeja exhibited flair with a valiant fifty, while Saransh Jain and Suthar accounted for 63 crucial runs. Gurnoor Brar also flaunted his power-hitting skills, scoring 36 runs off just 18 deliveries with the help of four sixes. 

The prolific success of India's lower-middle-order batters could discourage the team management from adding another middle-order player like Sarfaraz to the squad for this two-match series. 

Despite failing in the practice match, Dhruv Jurel and Rishabh Pant will make it into the first-choice XI. Considering their reputation as proven match-winners, the Indian team management will likely play Jurel and Pant at number five and six, respectively. 

With Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Padikkal and Shubman Gill occupying the top four slots, there's no real space for Sarfaraz Khan to get into the middle order. Furthermore, as the Gautam Gambhir-led team management tends to prioritise all-rounders over specialist batters, the batting performance of Jadeja, Suthar and Saransh might close Sarfaraz's selection doors. 

3. Trust issue that stemmed from BGT 2024-25 controversy

Before getting sidelined from the Indian Test setup, Sarfaraz Khan played six Tests and scored 371 runs at an average of 37.1. He had four fifty-plus scores in eleven outings. These facts highlight that he was not exactly a failure in Tests, and his performance alone didn't make him worth dropping from the team. 

However, according to the reports, it was Sarfaraz Khan who leaked the developments that took place inside a tense Indian dressing room to the media when India were getting drubbed by a ruthless Australian team during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. 

His alleged controversial conversation with an Australian journalist created trust issues for the Indian team management, resulting in Sarfaraz's immediate disappearance from the Indian setups, including the A-side. 

So, if the controversy is still fresh in the team management's mind, the BCCI selection committee could be influenced to ignore Sarfaraz Khan for yet another time.
