In a significant development, the Indian skipper Shubman Gill will not take the field on Day 1 of the three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI on August 7. He sustained an injury to his right ring finger on Thursday (August 6) during the team's practice session.
Meanwhile, talking about the match, Sri Lanka XI won the toss and elected to bat first. This will give India an opportunity to test their bowling attack and fielding combinations in this important practice match.

Why Is KL Rahul Captaining India vs Sri Lanka?
With Shubman Gill unavailable for the opening day's play, senior batter KL Rahul has been given the responsibility of leading the Indian side.
The BCCI confirmed that the decision to rest Gill was taken purely as a precaution, and the medical team is closely monitoring his condition.
In an official update, the BCCI said - "Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India’s practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill’s absence."
How Did Shubman Gill Hurt Himself During Practice?
Shubman Gill first injured his hand while batting in the nets when a ball from right-arm fast bowler Gurnoor Brar struck him. After receiving medical attention, he returned to continue his practice.
Later, Gill was hit on the same hand again during fielding practice while attempting a catch in the slips. He stepped away briefly to put ice on his finger before joining the session again.
Since a few other players like Jasprit Bumrah, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Sai Sudharsan, Washington Sundar and Harshit Rana are also dealing with fitness concerns, the Indian team and management did not want to take any further unnecessary risk before the Test series.
What Lies Ahead For Shubman Gill?
With the first Test against Sri Lanka scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, India still has a few days to evaluate Gill’s condition.
There is a possibility that the team management may choose not to take any unnecessary risk by resting him for the remainder of the practice match. This approach would allow him enough time to recover fully before the start of the Test series.
The fact that cannot be denied is that Gill’s availability is extremely important for India. Since taking over the responsibility of leading the Test side, he has become one of the team’s most dependable batters.
For now, the focus remains on his recovery. If his fitness improves over the next few days, Shubman Gill is expected to lead India in the opening Test.
