Vinay Kumar joins Karnataka [Source: RCB, KSCA/x]
Former India cricketer Vinay Kumar has been roped in by the Karnataka State Association (KCA). The 42-year-old was appointed as head coach of the Karnataka cricket team ahead of this year’s 2026-27 Indian domestic home season.
It is worth noting that the former fast bowler also spent 15 years as a Karnataka cricketer, before joining Puducherry for a brief stint in 2019.
Vinay Kumar cleared by Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble to coach Karnataka
Vinay Kumar has been appointed as head coach of the Karnataka cricket team for the upcoming 2026-27 domestic season. Notably, the former fast bowler is learnt to have been cleared by the Cricket Administrative Committee (CAC) for the high-profile role.
The committee itself includes several legendary Indian and Karnataka cricketers like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Sunil Joshi, Javagal Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad.

Kumar’s appointment will likely be made official by the KCA at the managing committee meeting on Thursday, August 13 next week. Several other coaching staff appointments of the men’s and women’s teams will also be confirmed in the same meeting.
It is learnt that the 42-year-old is on track to become the highest-paid coach ever roped in by the KSCA for the Karnataka cricket team.
What value can Vinay Kumar bring for Karnataka team?
Vinay Kumar holds a legion of experience in Indian domestic cricket. A veteran of over 450 matches in competitive cricket, the fast bowler was part of the Karnataka team for 15 years between 2004 and 2019, before joining Puducherry in the fag end of his career.
Moreover, the former Indian speedster also spent a major part of his IPL career at the RCB franchise, a team that is based out of Karnataka.
Kumar also remains the most successful captain in Karnataka history, and was one of their key members during their golden run between 2013 and 2015. In this period, the Karnataka cricket team won successive Ranji Trophy titles, and also lifted the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Irani Trophy twice each.
With 504 first-class wickets to his name, including 410 for Karnataka, Vinay Kumar is expected to bring his vast domestic experience and deep understanding of Karnataka cricket to the dressing room.
Vinay has previously coached the Hubli Tigers team in the recently-concluded Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 tournament. While he recently held a meeting with Vyshak Vijaykumar and Vidwath Kaverappa, the former fast bowler is expected to hold a two-week training camp for the Karnataka team at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
How did Karnataka perform in previous domestic season?
Earlier this year, Karnataka reached the final of the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. However, the team lost to Jammu and Kashmir (on first innings) on the big day in Hubballi.
Karnataka, however, failed to go past the opening round of the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy season, and lost to Vidarbha in the semifinal of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy season in India.
