For the unaware, the upcoming event will be a mini-auction, meaning franchises will largely work around their existing squads while addressing specific gaps ahead of the new season. Ahead of the mega tournament, the specific month for the auction event has been locked in.IPL 2027 auction to be held in DecemberThe IPL 2027 player auction is set to take place in the second week of December 2026, according to the latest report from Cricinfo. While the BCCI has not announced an exact date yet, the second week of December would broadly place the event between December 7 and December 13, 2026, if the previous year’s mini auction dates are taken into account.The auction will also be the last mini-auction of the 2023-27 IPL cycle, before the league moves towards the next mega-auction cycle.The previous IPL mini-auction, ahead of the 2026 season, was held on December 16, 2025, at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. It was a one-day event that began at 2:30 PM IST.This time, however, the IPL is expected to bring the auction back to India after three consecutive overseas editions with a grand celebration planned from December 2027 for 100 years of BCCI.The development comes after the IPL Governing Council meeting, where Arun Dhumal and Khairul Majumdar were also re-elected to the governing body. The league's overseas run took the auction to Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi between 2024 and 2026, but the event is now set to return home. The exact Indian city, however, has not yet been finalised.IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal has indicated that the venue selection will depend heavily on five-star hotel availability. The timing is particularly challenging because the second week of December falls during India's peak winter wedding season.The BCCI needs to secure a substantial block of luxury accommodation for the 10 franchises, with more than 100 rooms potentially required across multiple nights. Once a city can provide the required accommodation and venue arrangements, the BCCI is expected to officially announce the location.The return to India is currently specific to the 2027 mini-auction, while the IPL 2028 mega-auction could still be held overseas.IPL 2027 player pool and format of upcoming auctionThe IPL 2027 auction will remain a mini-event, rather than the larger squad-reset exercise associated with a mega-auction. Therefore, the existing core of each franchise's squad is expected to remain largely intact.The retention and release process, along with the pre-auction trade window, will determine the player pool available to franchises. The Impact Player rule remains under review, with the IPL Governing Council yet to announce a final decision on its continuation.For the 2027 season, the baseline auction purse is expected to be ₹120 crore per franchise, while the overall team salary cap is set at ₹157 crore. The latter includes the auction purse as well as applicable performance payments and mandatory match fees.However, ₹120 crore will not represent the amount every franchise actually carries into the auction.
