The ‘Impact Player’ Rule, introduced to add greater tactical flexibility to teams, has been a topic of debate since its introduction in the IPL. It allows teams to substitute a player during a match, giving them the flexibility to alter their combination based on the demands of the game.

However, some fans and cricket experts believe the rule has made genuine all-rounders obsolete, with teams often preferring to bring in a specialist batter or bowler at the halfway stage rather than relying on players who can contribute with both. 

According to former CSK cricketer Suresh Raina, the ‘Impact Player’ rule has put bowlers at a disadvantage ever since it came into existence back in 2023.

Suresh Raina wants to abolish Impact Player rule

While speaking with former Indian opener Aakash Chopra on his show 'Baith and Bol' powered by CREX, CSK great Suresh Raina criticised the Impact Player Rule. 

Raina, who is stated that the rule forces even fit players to sit out for significant portions of the game, and it leaves absolutely nothing for the bowlers. 

The former Indian cricketer also added that IPL seasons have become increasingly high-scoring events ever since the ruled came into effect, with teams often scoring totals like 300.

He said, “I am against the Impact player rule. A lot of fit players also bat and just sit down. How will you improve? There is no such rule in the World Cup. I understand the entertainment factor, but there is nothing left for the bowlers. Earlier, 170 was a competitive score, but now 250 is being chased as well. Even 300 is being scored.”

Suresh Raina added, “Leave something for the bowlers. There is no wicket-taking option. The batters don't get out, and with extra batters, there will be pressure on the bowlers.”

Raina joins Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli against Impact Player Rule

Suresh Raina is not the first Indian cricketer who has criticised the impact player rule. Previously, former Indian captain and Mumbai Indians legend Rohit Sharma pointed out that the rule discourages teams from using proper all-rounders in IPL matches, considering they have the luxury to just swap a specialist batter with a specialist bowler at any point. 

RCB icon Virat Kohli also backed Rohit Sharma and claimed that the rule “disrupts the balance” of the game. All-time great Sachin Tendulkar once stated that the rule adds one extra batter in the line-up, which in turn puts extreme pressure on the bowlers. 

Impact Player Rule under review by BCCI

As per reports, the Impact Player Rule is currently under review by the BCCI. Just a few days ago, an explosive report claimed that the Indian board has asked all IPL franchises to share their views on the much-debated rule.

The franchises submitted their feedback by August 31, as per BCCI’s instructions. With complaints from Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, as well as with growing public scrutiny, the Indian board might well feel inclined to either make changes to the rule or abolish it completely before next year’s IPL 2027 season.

First introduced in 2023, the rule, however, has added an extra layer of tactical intrigue and entertainment to the tournament, making its complete removal a difficult decision for the BCCI.
