VVS Laxman's new BCCI role revealed [Source: AFP]
VVS Laxman has been in the headlines for the last few days after he held a press conference as the man in charge of the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru. Furthermore, there were reports that he could be handed a bigger responsibility in the coming days.
Laxman took over as the head of COE (then NCA) in 2021, and the BCCI has already developed state-of-the-art facilities with his help. Under his leadership, players hone their skills with the best mentorship and work on the physical aspect of their game.
What is going to be Laxman’s new role with BCCI?
Following a couple of days of speculation that Laxman was rumoured to be getting a new role with the BCCI, there has been some clarity on the matter.
The immediate thoughts in everyone’s mind were a potential red-ball head coach role for Laxman, replacing Gautam Gambhir at the helm after lacklustre results over the last 24 months. However, according to Sports Today’s Nikhil Naz, it is believed that VVS Laxman is the prime candidate to become BCCI’s Director of Cricket soon.
This will be a reward for Laxman’s legacy as a player, scoring over 11,000 international runs, as well as for the work that he has put in at the COE and while developing talent. He also coached the U19 World Cup-winning team earlier in 2026.

What will VVS Laxman’s responsibility be as Director of Cricket?
If and when VVS Laxman is made the new Director of Cricket at the BCCI, he will be the go-to man for the board in any cricket-related decision. This means he will call the shots on all the sporting decisions in Indian cricket, and this will include all kinds of Men’s and Women’s cricket in the country.
Previously, he had worked in a three-man Cricket Advisory Committee with Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly when Anurag Thakur was the Secretary of the governing body.
During his time with CAC, he was one of the advisors who took major decisions like the appointment of Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri as head coaches of the men’s team. This time, he will be the final decision-maker for similar things.
Laxman to hold the unique post
Whenever the news of VVS Laxman’s appointment as Director of Cricket at the BCCI becomes official, he will be the first-ever person to hold this specific post. Ravi Shastri, who briefly held a similar role, was given the responsibility to supervise the then coach Duncan Fletcher and his staff.
Previously, there hasn’t been a permanent Director of Cricket post in the BCCI. The President and Secretary are the main men of the body, while others act as advisors.
Through the years, the following are the only six former legends to have held the major roles in the board in India.
- Pusapati Vijay Ananda (Vizzy) - 1954 to 1956 (President)
- Sunil Gavaskar - 2014 (Interim President)
- Diana Edulji - 2017 to 2019 (Committee of Administrators)
- Sourav Ganguly - 2019 to 2022 (President)
- Roger Binny - 2022 to 2025 (President)
- Mithun Manhas - 2025 to Present (President).
