The Delhi Capitals is playing against the Mumbai Indians at the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on April 4, 2026. This highly anticipated encounter sees the Delhi Capitals play their first game of the season at home.
Mumbai Indians were forced into early setbacks by Delhi’s bowlers, with Mukesh Kumar playing a crucial role in dismantling Mumbai’s top order. However, it was a moment of self-criticism from Mumbai's star player, Rohit Sharma, that stole the spotlight early in the game.
Earlier, DC's captain, Axar Patel, won the toss and opted to bowl first against the five-time champions, the Mumbai Indians.
Rohit Sharma’s Aggressive Departure
The Mumbai Indians’ batting innings started with disappointment as DC’s bowlers seized early wickets. Mukesh Kumar’s twin strikes, dismissing Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma in quick succession, left Mumbai reeling at 18/2.
The responsibility for rebuilding the innings fell to the experienced duo of Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav. Both players responded positively to stitch together a crucial 53-run partnership.

However, just as the Mumbai Indians seemed to be gaining control, DC captain Axar Patel struck again. In the third ball of the 9th over, Axar bowled a ball wide outside off, which Rohit Sharma attempted to slap through the covers.
Unfortunately, Rohit did not get the elevation he hoped for, and the ball was caught brilliantly by Nitish Rana at short extra cover. The dismissal broke the important partnership, leaving Rohit visibly frustrated.
Rohit Sharma turns Virat Kohli
As Rohit walked back to the pavilion, the camera caught a moment of self-criticism from the veteran batter. Rohit was seen angrily abusing himself, expressing his disappointment in no uncertain terms and recreating Virat Kohli’s fiery on-field emotions.
His frustration was palpable as he walked off, shaking his head, clearly disappointed with himself for not capitalising on his start.
Despite Rohit Sharma’s aggressive departure, Mumbai’s batting hopes now rest on the shoulders of Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir.

DC and MI’s IPL 2026 Journey So Far
It is important to note that Delhi Capitals kicked off their season in dramatic fashion earlier this week when they beat Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets at the Ekana Stadium. The match had a rollercoaster start for Delhi Capitals, who found themselves struggling at 26/4 while chasing a modest target of 142 runs.
With the game hanging in the balance, impact player Sameer Rizvi rose to the occasion, making 70 off 47 balls. Along with South Africa’s Tristan Stubbs, who contributed 39 off 32 balls, the duo guided Delhi Capitals to a win.
On the other hand, the Mumbai Indians had a far smoother start to their IPL 2026 campaign. In their opening game against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mumbai faced a stiff challenge as KKR put up a mammoth total of 220.
However, Mumbai Indian's opening duo of Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma took charge, with both batters playing explosive knocks.
Rickelton scored a rapid 81 off 43 balls, while Rohit smashed a blistering 76 off 38 balls, forming an opening partnership of 148 runs. Their efforts ensured that Mumbai cruised to victory.
