Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain, has started in IPL 2026 from where he had left off in IPL 2025. He has led the Punjab Kings to wins in both of their first two matches and, in doing so, has earned a huge record in terms of his captaincy in the Indian Premier League.
Punjab Kings started their IPL 2026 against Gujarat Titans on March 31 and defeated the IPL 2022 champions by 3 wickets in a low-scoring entertainer. Then on April 3, 2026, Punjab Kings chased down 209 runs in style against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), winning the game by 5 wickets.

Chennai Super Kings was put into bat first and posted 209/5, with Ayush Mhatre making 73 in 43 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes. Shivam Dube made 45* with 5 fours and one six, while Sarfaraz Khan made 32 in 12 balls with 6 fours and 1 six.
In response, Priyansh Arya made 39 in 11 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes, while Prabhsimran Singh made 43 and Cooper Connolly made 36. Shreyas Iyer led with 50, with 4 fours and 3 sixes, as Punjab Kings achieved the target in 18.4 overs with 5 wickets in hand.

Thanks to this win, Punjab Kings now have four points from two games and are at the top of the IPL 2026 points table.

With this amazing win leading the Punjab Kings, Shreyas Iyer left the likes of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma behind in terms of captaincy in the Indian Premier League. Shreyas Iyer has now become the captain with the highest winning percentage in IPL history.
He now has a 59.80% win rate in the IPL as captain. Notably, Shreyas Iyer has captained Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and now Punjab Kings in the IPL. He remains the only captain to take three different IPL teams into the final. He led DC to the IPL 2020 final, won the IPL 2024 for KKR, and led PBKS into the IPL 2025 final.
Following Shreyas Iyer is Hardik Pandya, who has captained Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in IPL. Sachin Tendulkar, who captained the Mumbai Indians, and Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiants captain MS Dhoni come next.
