Gautam Gambhir is an animated character, and when things don’t go according to his plans, the Indian head coach tends to showcase his emotions. This is exactly what happened during the high-octane T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan in Colombo as Gambhir lost his cool on Tilak Varma.

The match started on a horrendous note for India as the side lost Abhishek Sharma for a duck. It was followed by an Ishan Kishan masterclass as the opener changed the complexion of the match and scored a whirlwind 40-ball 77.

However, his dismissal changed the complexion of the match as the duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma struggled for runs, and they brought Pakistan back in the contest with a slow-batting approach. Tilak, in particular looked scratchy as he couldn’t rotate the strike and was swung momentum in Pakistan’s favour.

During the drinks break (10-overs mark), Gambhir came out of the dugout and had an animated conversation with Tilak.

The head coach was furious as the Indian batter was playing slowly and Pakistan was regaining its confidence. Gambhir urged the batter to up the ante as India wanted to target a total in excess of 170.

After the conversation, the coach of the Indian team looked upset in the dugout as the match was drifting away.

Tilak's knock halts India's momentum

When Ishan Kishan was dismissed for 77, India’s score was 88/2 inside 8.4 overs, and the team was all set to cross the 200-run mark, which would have put pressure on the Pakistan batters.

However, Pakistan used spinners in the middle-overs, and Tilak, who is not known for his strike-rotation, struggled to score runs quickly as the batter went inside his shell and Pakistan was back in the contest. India was 88/2 when Kishan departed, and by the time Tilak was dismissed (25 off 24), India had only added 38 runs in the next 6 overs, which was just above run-a-ball.

As a result of this, Gambhir was furious as he perhaps wanted India’s number 3 to accelerate, but that never happened as the batter was sent back at a crucial juncture.

India score just above par total as batters struggled against spinners

From expecting a 200-plus total, India could only score 175/7, which is still considered a par total on this wicket. Abhishek Sharma was knocked over for a 4-ball duck by Salman Agha, and despite the early setback, Ishan Kishan looked unfazed as he tore apart the Pakistan bowling and made a mockery of them.

However, his dismissal brought Pakistan back in the hunt as Saim Ayub was at his best, taking 3 wickets and giving away only 25 runs. Mystery spinner, Usman Tariq wa also crucial as India played him safely, and he only conceded 24 runs.

In the end, some lusty blows from Shivam Dube helped India to cross the 170-run mark as the bowlers have something to defend.
