It was a full house at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo for the India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 match. However, it turned into an anti-climactic outing for India's firebrand opener, Abhishek Sharma, who was dismissed for a duck against Pakistan on February 15.
Abhishek Sharma, known for his extraordinary form with the bat in T20I cricket, where his explosive knocks have often taken India past 200-plus totals, has failed to open his account in this T20 World Cup so far.
Ahead of the Pakistan anti-climax, Abhishek Sharma also recorded a golden duck against the USA on February 7 before reporting a severe stomach infection, for which he had to be hospitalised and missed the Namibia clash.
Abhishek Sharma Disappoints With A Duck Vs Pakistan
Nevertheless, Abhishek Sharma's poor start affected India's campaign, as they came in to bat first after Pakistan chose to bowl in Colombo. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav walked out for the toss alongside Salman Ali Agha, though neither of them shook hands, continuing the trend since the Asia Cup 2025.
The captains did not exchange courtesies or words at the formal toss ceremony, and the atmosphere remained tense between the two sides.
Opting to bowl spin in the first over, something Pakistan does not usually do, Agha tempted Abhishek into taking a strike after Ishan Kishan gave him the strike on the second ball.
The Suryakumar Yadav vs Salman Agha Tussle
It felt more like an off-field tussle between Pakistan's captain Salman Ali Agha and India captain Suryakumar Yadav. Ahead of the match during the press conference, Suryakumar Yadav was cheeky with his statement when he said that the team was looking forward to Abhishek Sharma to play.
SKY took a subtle dig at Pakistan by suggesting that if Abhishek Sharma played, he would be certain doom for the Pakistan team, given that Abhishek boasts a strike rate of 194.45 in T20Is from 39 matches, along with an average of 36.02.
However, it seems that Surya’s words fell flat, as Salman Agha turned the tables by dismissing the opener in the very first over of the match, and that too for a duck.
Let’s take a look at how netizens reacted to SKY’s overconfidence and Abhishek Sharma’s dismissal against Pakistan:

How Abhishek Sharma Was Dismissed By Salman Ali Agha
Abhishek struggled while trying to defend and drive the initial deliveries. On the last ball of Agha's over, visibly under pressure, the Indian batter attempted a pull shot to release pressure after India had scored only one run in the over.
He went on the back foot to pull a length ball on the stumps, but the timing was completely off due to minimal pace. Shaheen Shah Afridi took a simple catch, and Abhishek Sharma had to walk back.
Ahead of the match, for the unaware, after a massive tussle between the ICC and the Pakistan Cricket Board for more than a week, the Pakistan government finally allowed the boycott, imposed on February 1, to be lifted on February 9.
The boycott was initially placed as Pakistan did not want to play against India on February 15. Nevertheless, after it was lifted, both camps were eager to face each other on the field.
After almost five months without any bilateral meetings, this encounter was special for both the teams in terms of competing in a world stage where Abhishek Sharma once again failed to perform.
