Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fired Team India to a comprehensive win over Zimbabwe in the first T20I. West Indies has named a strong squad for the Test series against Pakistan. In other news, the ECB also mapped out the entire schedule of the Ashes 2027 in men's and women's categories. 

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news stories that emerged on Thursday, July 23. 

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Mayank Yadav take India 1-0 up in Zimbabwe 

Team India pulverised Zimbabwe by seven wickets and with 40 balls to spare in the first T20I in Harare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Comeback man Mayank Yadav wrecked Zimbabwe’s top-order with the new ball, claiming figures of 2-18.

Chasing 126 runs for a win, teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi celebrated his return to the playing XI with a record maiden 50 from just 19 balls with four fours and four sixes. 

Roston Chase to lead, West Indies name squad for Pakistan Tests

West Indies Cricket has named a strong 15-player squad for their upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan at home. 

Test skipper and senior all-rounder Roston Chase will continue to lead the side, and he will be accompanied by fellow star performers like Tagenarine Chanderpaul, white-ball captain Shai Hope and fast-bowling maverick Kemar Roach, among others. 

The Test series will be played between July 25 and August 6 in Tarouba and Port of Spain. 

Manjot Kalra’s Jaffna Kings ownership terminated amid LPL 2026

The Innovative Production Group (IPG) has officially terminated the ownership agreement of the Jaffna Kings franchise. The decision was made following a collapse of the financial structure of Jaffna Kings’ owners, Sports Commune.

As per reports, the Sports Commune has failed to disperse sponsorship funds, prompting the IPG and SLC to take over operational control of the team. A few days ago, Sports Commune’s Manjot Kalra was also arrested in Sri Lanka. 

ECB announces The Ashes 2027 schedule and WTC final venue

The England and Wales Cricket Board announced the international fixtures for the 2027 home summer. The Ashes 2027 will kickstart on June 18 at Trent Bridge, with Lord's, Edgbaston, Southampton and The Oval hosting the remaining fixtures of the historic series. 

It's worth mentioning that The Kennington Oval will also host the WTC 2027 final from June 9 to 13. 

Meanwhile, the one-off Women's Ashes Test will be played from June 24 to 27 at Headingley before the Australian and English women take on each other across three ODIs and T20Is. The English teams will also host Bangladesh (men's and women's) and New Zealand (men's) across multiple international fixtures. 

SA20 2027 schedule revealed

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has unveiled the entire schedule of the SA20 2027 season. As per the itinerary, the opening match of the tournament will be played between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals on January 17 in St George’s Park. 

The final will be hosted by the Newlands Cricket Ground the following month on February 21.
