Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have entered a new phase after a disappointing IPL 2026 season. The five-time champions failed to qualify for playoffs once again and finished 8th on points table with 12 points. So, the franchise decided to make major changes ahead of IPL 2027.
The biggest change came when CSK and legendary head coach Stephen Fleming mutually agreed to part ways after 17 successful years.
Stephen Fleming Leaves CSK Head Coach Role After 17 Years
Notably, Fleming first played for CSK in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before becoming the team’s head coach in 2009. During his regime, he guided the franchise to five IPL titles, with the latest coming in 2023.
However, CSK have not reached the playoffs since lifting the trophy in 2023. They even finished last in IPL 2025, which was one of the worst seasons in the franchise’s history.
Therefore, the management is now expected to appoint a new head coach who can rebuild the team and bring back its winning culture. Here are 3 potential former Indian players for CSK head coach role ahead of IPL 2027.
Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid is one of the strongest candidates for CSK head coach role. Notably, he is among the most respected coaches and has built a strong reputation through his work.
After retiring from cricket, Dravid coached IND Under19 and India A between 2015 and 2021. During that period, he helped develop several young players and guided India to Under19 World Cup title in 2018. Later, he became the head coach of the Indian men’s team.
Under his guidance, India reached the final of ODI WC 2023 and won T20 World Cup 2024, ending the country’s 10-year wait for an ICC trophy. Although his stint with Rajasthan Royals didn't produce the desired results; is overall coaching record remains phenomenal.
Another impressive factor is his long association with MS Dhoni. Notably, the two have played together for India, which means they already share mutual respect and understanding. Therefore, if CSK appoint Dravid, he could bring a strong long-term vision to the franchise.

Hemang Badani
Former India batter Hemang Badani is another name that could be on CSK’s shortlist. Reports have suggested that the franchise is considering him due to his successful coaching journey in recent years.
Notably, Badani served as head coach of Delhi Capitals during IPL 2025 and IPL 2026. Before entering IPL, he enjoyed tremendous success in franchise and domestic cricket. He won four TNPL titles, three LPL championships and 1 ILT20 trophy.
In addition, Badani has worked closely with several Indian cricketers across different tournaments. As a coach, he is known for backing young players and adapting quickly to different situations. Since CSK are expected to rebuild their squad with fresh talent, Badani’s coaching style could suit the team’s future plans. If franchise want a younger CSK head coach with modern ideas, Badani could be a smart option.
Chandrakant Pandit
Chandrakant Pandit is another experienced coach who could replace Stephen Fleming. Over the years, he has earned a reputation as one of India best domestic coaches.
Notably, Pandit became head coach of KKR ahead of IPL 2022 after replacing Brendon McCullum. He later guided KKR to IPL 2024 title, proving his ability to manage a T20 side. However, he parted ways with KKR before IPL 2026 season.
Apart from the IPL, Chandrakant Pandit has achieved remarkable success in domestic cricket by helping multiple teams win Ranji Trophy. Notably, he has also worked with NCA and India’s Under-19 team. In fact, he served as India’s head coach during the 2010 Under-19 World Cup.
It is worth mentioning that Pandit is known for his disciplined coaching style and ability to get the best out of his players. Therefore, if CSK are looking for someone who can rebuild the team with a winning mindset, he could be a strong contender for CSK head coach role.
