England blanked Pakistan in the first Test [Source: AFP]
England crushed Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley in Leeds to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series. The outcome also marked England’s only fifth Test victory after 14 attempts in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
Following England’s one-sided show in Leeds, here is a look at the updated points table of the 2025-27 WTC as race for a top two spot heats up.
Updated WTC Table after big England win over Pakistan
England remain at seventh despite improved PCT
The England cricket team, under the leadership of new captain Joe Root, blanked Pakistan in just two-and-a-half days of their first Test at Headingley. The outcome brought some respite for the Englishmen following their successive series defeats at the hands of Australia (away) and New Zealand (at home) over the last eight months.
With the win, hosts England also marginally improved their PCT from 24.36 to 29.76. Despite improving their PCT by recording a rare Test win in the ongoing 2025-27 WTC cycle, the England cricket team continue to occupy number seventh spot on the nine-team standings.
Pakistan slips to the bottom
The Pakistan cricket team recently thrashed West Indies in Port of Spain earlier this month to notch up their first Test win after a gap of four straight defeats. Recording only their second win overall in the ongoing 2025-27 WTC cycle, the ‘Men in Green’ seems to have returned to their ‘losing ways’ by getting obliterated by a strong English side at Leeds.
In Pakistan’s defense, the team took field at Headingly against England without the services of its captain and legendary batter Babar Azam. Moreover, even interim captain Agha Salman suffered an injury on Day 2 and spent a significant portion of the match on the sidelines.
In any case, Pakistan’s PCT has now slipped down from 22.22 to 19.04 after seven matches in this cycle. They also displaced West Indies to become the new bottom-placed side on the 2025-27 WTC charts.
The top six slots of the nine-team WTC 2025-27 standings pretty much remains the same, with Australia occupying the top slot despite their latest defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin. They are followed by defending champions South Africa at number two with a strong PCT of 75.

How can England and Pakistan qualify for WTC 2025-27 final
For England to secure a top two spot on the WTC 2025-27 points table before the final, they need to win each of their remaining seven matches (2 against Pakistan, 3 against South Africa and 2 against Bangladesh) to reach a maximum PCT of 53.17.
Even in such a case, the Englishmen will have to strongly rely on certain exterior results and hope that teams like Australia and South Africa lose all their remaining fixtures.
Much like England, Pakistan’s WTC final ambitions have also taken a severe hit following their string of defeats against Bangladesh and West Indies. They also need to win each of their remaining three series with emphatic margins, but chances are that the Pakistan cricket team will still not get close to a top two finish regardless of other results.
How England and Pakistan have fared across all WTC cycles
Both England and Pakistan teams are yet to qualify for a WTC final. Pakistan’s best finish occurred in the inaugural WTC edition, when they finished sixth on the nine-team table.
The England team, meanwhile, finished fourth in the 2019-21 as well as in the 2021-23 cycles.
