Pakistan captain Salman Agha has walked off the field on Day 2 of the first Test match against England. The cricketer seems to have taken a nasty blow to his hand while fielding at second slip during the second session of the day.
The incident occurred during the 47th over of the first England innings at Headingley in Leeds, at a time when Harry Brook was batting at the crease.
Pakistan captain Salman Agha drops a catch and walks off
During the second session of Day 2 of the first Test match between Pakistan and hosts England, visiting skipper Salman Agha dropped a catch while fielding at second slip at the start of the 47th over of the innings.
Khurram Shahzad surprised Harry Brook with a length ball as the world number one ranked Test batter had his bat hung outside the body. Salman made a dive to his right but failed to get his palm behind the ball. Not only did the Pakistani skipper dropped the catch, the cricketer was forced to walk off the field as blood was dripping from his finger following the impact.
Salman Agha joins Babar Azam to suffer hand injury as Pakistan captain
Interestingly, Salman Agha is not the only ‘Pakistan captain’ to have suffered a hand injury on this England tour. Last week, regular skipper Babar Azam was hit on his hand during Pakistan’s warm-up match against the Professional County Club Select XI in Beckenham.
Not only was he ruled out halfway into the warm-up match, the legendary batter was later excluded from Pakistan’s playing XI for the first Test of the series against England.
In the absence of Babar Azam, the Pakistan team management appointed national T20I skipper Salman Agha as Pakistan’s interim captain for the series-opener at Leeds.
With Salman also suffering a hand injury on Day 2 of the match, the Pakistan cricket team is now deprived of two captains from the field, at least for the time being.
Who is leading Pakistan in absence of Salman Agha?
In the absence of Salman Agha, middle-order batter Saud Shakeel is leading the Pakistan cricket team at Headingley against England.
Shakeel has played 24 Tests for Pakistan since his debut back in December 2022. It is worth noting that the 31-year-old is yet to lead the Pakistan cricket team in any international format to date, marking his sudden ascension his accidental ‘captaincy debut’.
England motor towards big lead over Pakistan
There seems to be no end to Pakistan’s troubles at Leeds, considering the English batters are motoring towards a huge first innings lead over the visitors.
With Pakistan already down by two captains for the time being, England’s lead has now grown to 68 runs by Tea on Day 2.
