The T20 World Cup 2026 saw a high-octane drama on Thursday, which eventually favoured the defending champions, India. Despite Arshdeep Singh delivering a match-winning spell, he had to share an embarrassing incident involving his father.

In the afternoon, South Africa defeated the West Indies by a massive margin, and then, the Men in Blue thrashed Zimbabwe in the evening. Having said that, these scenarios have made the road easier for the reigning champions, who seemed to be crumbling after losing the Super 8 fixture against the Proteas.

Now, the India versus the West Indies on Sunday has become a virtual quarter-final. Although in the build-up to that, there was a lot of adrenaline rush among the Indian fans, the cricketers, and even the families.

Why Arshdeep's father hurled abuse directed towards WI?

As things panned out, a South African victory on Thursday would have favoured India, and it certainly did. At one stage, the Proteas bowlers were looking to fold the Windies inside the 100-run mark. But then came a revival, Romario Shepherd and Jason Holder stitched a legendary 89-run partnership, taking the team total to 176/8.

During the time when Shepherd and Holder were going on song, Arshdeep's father, Darshan Singh, watching the match from the team hotel, got a bit carried away.

“We didn’t watch the whole thing, but it was certainly a see-saw affair. My family was with me in the hotel room, and whenever the West Indies batters smashed a six, my father started shouting: ‘What on earth are you doing?’,” Arshdeep Singh told the media.

The star Indian left-arm seamer even jokingly told the media that the father abused the Windies batters, and he had calmed him down.

“He was hurling abuse. I had to settle him down and tell him not to get so worked up. I told him to enjoy the cricket and keep praying for a South African win,” the Indian star pacer added.

Eventually, the Proteas bagged an easy victory, with the top three making a mockery of the chase. They chased down the target by nine wickets with 23 balls to spare.

Arshdeep Singh, India were on top!

In the evening, the Men in Blue, too, had a ball. First, the Indian batters tonked the Zimbabweans throughout the innings, as they posted a Herculean total of 256/4 - the highest in this edition of the tournament. Abhishek Sharma (55) and Hardik Pandya (50) slammed their respective half-centuries, while Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson also did their deeds.

Later, Zimbabwe punched above their weight, with Brian Bennett slamming an impressive 97 not out. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh snapped three wickets and became India's leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history, going past Jasprit Bumrah's tally of 33 scalps.

The Punjab Express, who has taken 35 wickets in T20 World Cups, is in 11th position in the overall list and is in fourth spot among pacemen.

Nevertheless, India will play their last Super 8 fixture against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata this Sunday. Interestingly, the side from the Caribbean has never lost a T20 World Cup game in the city of joy.
