In a significant development, Sri Lanka Cricket has entered a major turning point as Shammi Silva officially stepped down as the head of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Tuesday. The resignation came after increasing pressure from the government, marking a big shift in Sri Lanka Cricket.

The decision was taken during a special executive committee meeting that lasted nearly three hours. Along with Shammi Silva, other members of the committee also agreed to resign, signaling a complete leadership exit at a crucial time for Sri Lanka cricket.

This development from PTI, follows earlier reports that the government wanted the board to step down and allow a new administration to take control. With Shammi Silva now officially resigning, those plans are expected to move forward quickly.

Government pressure forces major change in Sri Lanka Cricket

The resignation of Shammi Silva comes after Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake called for a fresh start in cricket administration. The government had been under pressure from the public to take action against alleged mismanagement within SLC.

For weeks, questions were raised about transparency and governance, with Shammi Silva facing growing criticism. The government’s push made it clear that changes were necessary, and now Shammi Silva has stepped aside to make way for a new structure.

This is not the first time Sri Lanka cricket has faced such issues. The International Cricket Council (ICC) had earlier suspended the board in 2023 due to political interference, showing that governance problems have been ongoing.

Interim administration likely as transition begins

With Shammi Silva no longer in charge, the focus now shifts to what comes next. The resignation letters are expected to be submitted on Wednesday to Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, who will play a key role in shaping the next phase.

The authorities giving the hints of an interim committee or a new leadership group could soon take over the administration. The idea is to bring more professionalism and stability after a period of uncertainty under Shammi Silva.

The government is also believed to be in touch with the Jay Shah-led ICC to ensure that any changes follow international guidelines and avoid another suspension. They initially seeked intervention to hand over control of SLC to an interim committee.

Sri Lanka cricket looks for stability after turbulent phase

The resignation of Shammi Silva comes at a time when Sri Lanka cricket is already struggling on multiple fronts. Poor performances in recent tournaments, including the early elimination from the T20 World Cup 2026, have added to the pressure on the board.

There have also been internal issues, including disagreements between players and the board over NOC approvals and fitness matters. During this difficult period, leadership under Shammi Silva was often questioned by fans and experts.

Now, with Shammi Silva stepping down, Sri Lanka cricket has a chance to reset. The focus will be on rebuilding trust, improving communication, and creating a strict system for players to follow.
