Sri Lanka have broken their silence on the heated incident involving Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando during Day 1 of the second Test against India in Colombo, with the team management now addressing the matter after a dramatic moment on the field.

The incident quickly became one of the major talking points of the day, and the Sri Lankan camp has now shared its first official response through fast-bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk after play ended.

Sri Lanka Broke Silence On Yashasvi Jaiswal-Asitha Fernando Fight

It was a glorious day of Test cricket as India finished Day 1 on a high at 300/5, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring another century to steal the spotlight. However, scenes remained intense following the physical altercation between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando.

Following the day's play, the Sri Lankan camp was quick to address the media. When asked about the incident involving Jaiswal and Fernando, Sri Lanka fast-bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk opened up, saying, 

“We wanted our pacers to get something. The altercation was an overflow of emotion. I will leave that to the Match Referee.”

Van Niekerk's comments were Sri Lanka's first response to the heated Yashasvi Jaiswal-Asitha Fernando incident. While he admitted that emotions ran high, he said the Match Referee would decide if any action should be taken against either player.

India won an important toss at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo and decided to bat first. Yashasvi Jaiswal was in full flow during the morning session, producing beautiful strokes and scoring a magnificent 45 off 53 balls with nine boundaries.

Jaiswal looked at his best before an absolute jaffer from Asitha Fernando brought an unfortunate end to his innings. The Sri Lankan pacer uprooted his off-stump and celebrated passionately, while Jaiswal began walking back towards the pavilion.

However, things quickly turned heated as words were exchanged from the Sri Lankan side. Jaiswal turned back and confronted Fernando, with the two players eventually making head contact before teammates stepped in and separated them.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Fears ICC Punishment After Asitha Fernando Clash

Verbal altercations are common in cricket, but things become more serious when physical contact is involved. Yashasvi Jaiswal could now face disciplinary action from the ICC after the heated confrontation on Day 1 of 2nd Test between India and Sri Lanka.

Under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, inappropriate physical contact covers situations where a player deliberately, recklessly or negligently makes contact with another player or match official. 

Depending on the severity, punishments can include fines, demerit points or even suspension. The Sri Lankan camp has already addressed the incident, with Ryan van Niekerk calling it an “overflow of emotion” and leaving the matter to the Match Referee.
