Prithvi Shaw failed to make the most of his return to competitive cricket. Getting selected in the West Zone squad for the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2026 season, the forgotten India star scored just 22 off 21 balls on the opening day of the quarterfinal against North Zone before getting knocked over by Abid Mushtaq.
The blistering top-order batter was left completely deceived by the North Zone spinner as the West Zone lost its first wicket in just the sixth over of the innings.
Prithvi Shaw completely bamboozled by Abid Mushtaq
Out-of-favour Indian batter Prithvi Shaw started off his Duleep Trophy 2026 stint with confident boundaries against the North Zone. The attacking right-handed batter struck four of those to race to 22 off just 20 balls.
However, despite getting completely settled at the crease in Bengaluru, Shaw failed to read Abid Mushtaq’s sharp turn off the pitch in the sixth over of the innings.

Prithvi Shaw not on Team India cards despite prolific Ranji Trophy season
Just last year, Prithvi Shaw made a shift from Mumbai to Maharashtra citing inadequate opportunities in the former in Indian domestic competitions. The cricketer started off his Maharashtra career by playing seven matches in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season.
In 11 innings, Shaw minted 537 runs at a prolific average of 48.81 and with an attacking strike rate of 91.63, the highest among all batters with over 500 runs in the tournament.
Despite his proficient maiden season with Maharashtra, there were at least 36 players who scored more runs than Shaw in this year’s 2025-26 Ranji Trophy.
Finishing at 37th on the overall run-scoring charts, Shaw remains far from an India recall owing to intense competition in national domestic circuit. Even his latest setback against the North Zone in the 2026 Duleep Trophy season will only add to the questions surrounding his hopes of making a return to the Indian team.
What is Prithvi Shaw’s record in first-class cricket?
Prithvi Shaw has played 66 first class matches in his career so far, aggregating 5,115 runs in 114 innings at an average of 46.08.
He has plundered 14 hundreds and 21 half-centuries, with his magnum opus performance being the 379 he hammered against the Assam cricket team back in the Elite Group B match of the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season in Guwahati.
Shaw’s domestic record even earned him a place in the Indian Test XI back in October 2018. However, the cricketer managed to play just five Test matches for the country over the next two years before falling out of national contention.
Despite holding a prolific record in domestic cricket, the 26-year-old continues to remain sidelined from Team India Test ventures, particularly owing to the rise of fellow Mumbai-based opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal.
