As a spinner, Mathivanan’s biggest strength is his control. He does not overcomplicate things, instead repeatedly hitting disciplined lengths and offering virtually no room, making it difficult for batters to attack or manufacture scoring opportunities.

He also possesses enough variation to keep batters guessing, particularly with his pace. He can beat batters by taking pace off or pushing it through quicker, while maintaining the same controlled lengths and challenging them to create shots.

Against left-handers, Mathivanan has recently added another dimension by using wrist-spin to turn the ball away, combining that movement with his natural angle. It gives him a particularly awkward matchup and another way to trouble batters.

M. Mathivanan is yet to make his senior debut for Tamil Nadu, but his TNPL 2026 performances could finally pave the way. IPL teams can track that progress, especially those seeking a controlled left-arm spinner like him.

1. Mumbai Indians

Mumbai Indians could be a good destination for M. Mathivanan. They already have Mitchell Santner and Keshav Maharaj, while Atharva Ankolekar has not been trusted enough. Mathivanan could give them another reliable left-arm spin option.

Mumbai Indians’ spin attack struggled in IPL 2026, recording an economy rate of 9.96, the second-highest among all teams. They need a spinner who can control the game and slow down the scoring, and Mathivanan fits that profile.

Historically, Mumbai Indians have enjoyed success with Indian spinners in the past but have struggled to find a reliable replacement recently. Mathivanan could be someone they target at the IPL 2027 auction if he continues his impressive TNPL 2026 run.

2. Chennai Super Kings

CSK could also be an interesting option for M. Mathivanan. Prashant Veer was an expensive buy but could not make much impact, while Akeal Hosein gives them an overseas option. Mathivanan could provide a reliable Indian alternative.

Lucknow Super Giants could be another team that needs to seriously look at M. Mathivanan. They do not have a fixed Indian spinner playing regularly, with M. Siddharth and Shahbaz Ahmed among their left-arm options, while George Linde provides an overseas choice.

Their spin bowling was one of the biggest problems in IPL 2026. LSG’s spinners managed only 17 wickets, the second-lowest tally among teams, while their economy rate of 10.57 was the highest in the tournament.

With their pace attack doing most of the work, LSG are likely to strengthen their spin department further. They have already added an attacking option in Kuldeep Yadav through a trade deal with Delhi Capitals, but Mathivanan could give them another reliable Indian option.
