Sourav Ganguly shared an infamous relationship with former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell. During his playing days for Team India, Ganguly had a fallout with Chappell, who served as the head coach of the Indian national team.

In a recent interview, the former Indian skipper revealed that he received an unexpected email from Chappell way back in 2011, prior to the IPL 2011 season in India. Ganguly claimed that the seasoned Australian wanted to re-unite with him, albeit in the KKR franchise.

Sourav Ganguly says Greg Chappell wanted re-union at KKR

Sourav Ganguly has made an explosive claim that his former rival Greg Chappell wanted a re-union in 2011, i.e., years after their fallout in Indian cricket.

While speaking at the AddaGB podcast, Ganguly said that he received an email from Chappell prior to the IPL 2011 season, where the former Australian cricketer expressed his desire of coaching the KKR franchise. The former Indian skipper also added that Chappell wanted to coach the KKR, with Ganguly serving as captain.

The legendary Indian captain said “He (Chappell) had emailed me in 2011, when I was KKR captain. I was checking my mail one morning at my England home. I saw his mail and thought, 'Am I still sleeping?'. He wanted to coach KKR. With me as captain!”

It is worth noting that Greg Chappell himself played a crucial role in the sacking of Sourav Ganguly as Team India captain in the mid-2000s. With Rahul Dravid succeeding as national skipper, Chappell’s tenure as India head coach came to a disastrous end in 2007 when the ‘Men in Blue’ failed to go past the opening round of the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies.

Ganguly stated that he did not respond to Chappell’s mail, and added that he hardly responds to people who “are not honest”.

As it turned out, Ganguly himself was released by the KKR franchise prior to the IPL 2011 season, with the management appointing Gautam Gambhir as new skipper.

The legendary former Indian skipper went on to join the Pune Warriors India franchise instead.

When John Buchanan crossed paths with Ganguly

Interestingly, Greg Chappell was not the only Australia-based coach who had a fallout with Sourav Ganguly.

Much like Chappell, John Buchanan was also responsible for Ganguly losing his captaincy gig, albeit in the IPL back in 2009 for the KKR franchise. Under the guise of Buchanan’s “multiple captains” template, Ganguly was sacked from his role in favour of Brendon McCullum.

In turn, KKR finished at the bottom of the IPL 2009 season in South Africa with mere three wins from 14 matches.

Sourav Ganguly to re-join Delhi Capitals

As per reports, Ganguly has been approached by the Delhi Capitals franchise to serve as their head of cricket. The former Indian captain was previously associated with the Capitals when he was appointed as the Director of Cricket for JSW Sports in 2019.

As of now, it remains to be seen if Ganguly will indeed be re-joining the Capitals for next year’s IPL 2027 season.
