Sourav Ganguly has lodged a police complaint with the Thakurpukur Police Station. The former Indian captain filed the complaint against an unofficial Facebook fan page for allegedly spreading misinformation on social media.
According to reports, the Facebook fan page claimed that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had conducted a raid at Ganguly’s residence. The cricketer-turned-administrator has strongly denied the same, terming the claims as misleading and untrue.
Sourav Ganguly lodges complaint over Facebook page damaging his reputation
Ganguly has lodged a police complaint against a Facebook page named “Sourav Ganguly fans”. The former captain also mentioned the media platform Sportzwiki in his complaint.
As reported by India Today, the Facebook page claimed that ED has raided the ex-cricketer’s house.

Ganguly has since stated that such misleading information has been circulated online with an intent of damaging his reputation. The cricketer filed the complaint on Monday, June 15.
The report further states that the police authorities have already begun looking into the matter.
When Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar were targeted online
Interestingly, Sourav Ganguly is not the only former Indian cricketer who has fallen victim to fake social media posts. Back in 2023, his ex-teammate and all-time batting great Sachin Tendulkar was also subjected to misuse of his identity, albeit through fake online advertisement and social media posts.
Tendulkar raised the issue with the Mumbai Police Crime Branch by lodging a complaint against unidentified individuals. The Cyber Cell of the Mumbai Police department subsequently registered a case under sections 420, 465 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Sunil Gavaskar has also often expressed his displeasure against the misuse of his identity on social media platforms. Much like Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, Gavaskar approached the police authorities over false quotes and manipulated posts circulating on social media with his name attached.
Police investigation underway
The complaint filed by Ganguly has now been taken up by the Thakurpukur Police Station, with authorities reportedly beginning a preliminary investigation into the matter. The probe is expected to focus on the origin of the post and the individuals responsible for circulating the alleged misinformation on the concerned Facebook page and on other social media accounts.
Cases involving fake news and impersonation have become increasingly common in recent years, especially with the rise of social media and AI platforms.
Depending on the findings of the investigation, the authorities may examine whether any legal provisions related to defamation or identity misuse were violated by the Facebook page.
Ganguly’s decision of approaching the police authorities in West Bengal also highlights the growing concern among public figures regarding the unchecked spread of unverified information online. The development further serves as a reminder for regular social media users to verify information from official sources before accepting them as facts and sharing them on our own platforms.
