Indian captain Shubman Gill finally issued a statement on Rohit Sharma's retirement plans after the ODI series decider against England at Lord's. On Sunday, July 19, India suffered a narrow defeat as England bagged the three-match series, winning the final encounter by 27 runs. 

After conceding 387 runs without their premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, India came close to chasing the daunting total, if not for another middle-order collapse following a steady start. As the series marked its conclusion with a high-scoring clash, Shubman Gill opened up on Rohit Sharma's retirement while addressing the media.

Veteran batter Rohit Sharma is at the twilight of his career. However, despite being 39, Rohit still aims to represent India at the ODI World Cup in the African continent next year. 

Although Rohit remains optimistic to be part of India's squad for the 2027 World Cup, his dwindling form, especially in 2026, made critics doubt whether he could remain in the scheme of things for the mega event. 

A report from the Indian Express suggested that the Lord's ODI could be Rohit's last match in international cricket. Although the BCCI later dismissed the report, Shubman Gill gave an insight into Rohit Sharma's thought process amid the speculation.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gill revealed that while Rohit Sharma's retirement was fuelled by the media, the seasoned campaigner hadn't discussed it with his Indian teammates. 

"He's not told us anything. I think it's all out in the media. But there has not been any discussion like that," Shubman Gill told reporters after the third ODI between India and England.

Shubman Gill's statement made it clear that Rohit hasn't made up his mind to retire from international cricket as of now. 

Even if the thought of retirement crossed his mind before the Lord's ODI, the veteran player not only remained tight-lipped about his future plans but also worked hard for a turnaround in the crucial clash.

Rohit Sharma has undoubtedly been a match-winner for India in ODIs. However, with age catching up, the talismanic batter had struggled to get going in the 50-over format this year. 

Statistically, Rohit had managed only 241 runs, averaging a shade over 30 across eight matches prior to the Lord's ODI. 

Therefore, several media reports suggested that the BCCI could replace him with Yashasvi Jaiswal in India's 2027 World Cup plans, provided Rohit failed to capitalise on what was supposed to be his final opportunity. 

However, the stylish Mumbaikar played his best cricket in the most important game of his career, amassing 138 runs off just 110 deliveries. Rohit's innings not only boosted his morale but also reassured the selectors that he could still emerge as a potent weapon for the Men in Blue and help them win matches with his experience and batting expertise.

Rohit Sharma's retirement became the hottest topic of discussion as the right-hander registered 37 runs in the first two ODIs against England. However, Rohit can finally breathe a sigh of relief following his hundred at Lord's, as it kept him in the scheme of things for the 2027 World Cup. 

Up next, Rohit Sharma will be seen taking the field against West Indies when they visit India for a three-match ODI series, to be played from September 27 to October 3.
