Rohit Sharma answered his critics in the best possible way with his bat as he produced a sensational century at Lord’s during the ongoing third and final ODI between India and England on Friday, July 19.

The veteran opener played one of his finest knocks under pressure and kept India alive in their chase of a massive 388-run target. Ahead of the series decider, much of the discussion surrounding Rohit Sharma was not about his batting but about his future in ODIs.

However, Rohit chose not to respond to the rumours through words. Instead, he let his bat deliver the perfect answer on one of cricket’s biggest stages.

Rohit did not enjoy the easiest beginning to his innings. England’s bowlers kept him under pressure early and he had to work hard for every run. Notably, he reached his half-century at a run-a-ball pace and after that, he completely changed the momentum of the innings.

The experienced opener brought up his century with a boundary off Adil Rashid. The landmark came after a composed yet aggressive innings. As he brought up his eighth ODI century, Rohit celebrated in his trademark composed style. Instead of an over-the-top reaction, he simply pumped his fists before sharing a warm embrace with Virat Kohli.

Rohit then raised his bat towards the Indian dressing room and acknowledged his family in the stands. Notably, head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen applauding from the dressing room with a smile on his face, even giving Rohit a standing ovation in appreciation of the quality and significance of the innings.

It is also worth noting that the ton was significant for more than one reason. Rohit Sharma became the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s.

Before this innings, Sourav Ganguly’s 90 against England in 2004 was the highest individual ODI score by an Indian at the historic venue. By reaching three figures, Rohit Sharma entered the prestigious Lord’s honours board.

Notably, Rohit had struggled for rhythm during the earlier matches of the England ODI series, particularly at Edgbaston and Cardiff, where he scored 11(21) and 26(47), respectively. However, the innings at Lord’s showed his determination and ability to perform under pressure. He absorbed the early challenge before accelerating brilliantly once he was set.

While the debate surrounding his ODI future might continue after IND vs ENG ODI series, his performance at Lord’s has once again reminded everyone why he remains one of the finest openers of his generation.

With the 3rd ODI still ongoing, Rohit's century has given India a strong platform in the daunting chase of 388. At the time of writing, India need 84 runs in 36 balls.
