On Wednesday, November 4, India will begin their ODI series against New Zealand. Ahead of the first ODI, India captain Shubman Gill, who will lead the side for the first three ODIs, spoke about the playing XI for the 1st ODI.
Gill remarked that India have their top-four fixed and won’t experiment there. Notably, Shubman Gill will open with Rohit Sharma, followed by Virat Kohli at No.3, and Shreyas Iyer at No.4. The India captain remarked that India would experiment for No.5 and No.6 slots depending on the situation of the game.
KL Rahul’s Batting Order Not Fixed For New Zealand ODIs
Gill remarked that India will go ahead with a floater approach for the No.5 and No.6 position, which means that depending on the situation, Axar Patel can walk to bat ahead of KL Rahul.
"We will have a floating approach for No. 5 and No. 6. Our top four is set, all right-handers. So if a lefty is needed, Axar bhai goes and depending on the match situation, even KL bhai can go. So, a bit flexible," Shubman Gill said during a pre-match press conference.
Gill’s remark also confirms that Axar Patel, who was dropped from the T20I team for the 5th and final match, will be a part of the ODI team.
New Zealand ODIs A Great Opportunity for Out of favour stars
The upcoming ODI series also marks a final opportunity for out-of-favour players to prove their mettle and make their way into the ODI setup. Notably, Shubman Gill will captain the side for the first three ODIs, and then the Test-bound players will leave the squad to prepare for the upcoming two-match Test series.
Besides Gill, the likes of KL Rahul and a few others won’t be available for selection. Therefore, it presents a great opportunity for talents like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kumar Kushagra to impress the selectors and be part of the 20-25 pool of players shortlisted for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027.
